Hook: Today's random movie of the day landed on Jaws — Spielberg, 1975, TMDB rating 7.683, the whole deal. The subject seemed beaten to death: a million longforms about the film itself, another million about Peter Benchley and the real Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916. But in this story, I've always felt sorry for one character — the mechanical shark named "Bruce". Not the one we see in the film (or rather, don't see — and that's the whole technique), but that actual art object weighing 548 kg and measuring 7.6 meters, which now hangs from the ceiling of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. Because the story of "Bruce" is an engineering catastrophe that saved the film. Universal gave the team 4 months to build the shark instead of 18. Disney mechanical effects master Bob Mattey took on work that specialists across the industry called impossible. And when the shark drowned in its own complexity — salt water ate the electronics, hydraulics rusted in hours, paint fell off in chunks — Spielberg made a brilliant move: he stopped showing it. And that's where it gets really interesting — because that's how the language every horror and thriller still speaks was born.
To understand how suicidal the "Bruce" idea was, you first need to grasp the architecture of the concept. Summer of 1973, producer David Brown asked production designer Joe Alves to do sketches for Peter Benchley's not-yet-published novel. Alves had previously worked with Spielberg on The Sugarland Express — and had a reputation as someone who could turn everyday details into cinematic sets. When 26-year-old Spielberg saw the sketches, he said one phrase that defined the entire project: "God, if we do this, we should do a big full-sized shark, 25 feet, in the real ocean. Not in the backlot tank or something." [1]
Twenty-five feet — that's 7.6 meters. Meaning a mechanical robot the length of a small truck, which had to swim, open its jaws, move its fins and not sink in the Atlantic off Martha's Vineyard. Universal sent a request to its own special effects department — and got a response that makes your blood run cold: "We can't do this. It will take a year and a half to two years. We have bigger projects like 'Earthquake' and 'The Hindenburg'." Universal production head Marshall Green recalled later that people laughed at his answer: "Jaws bigger than The Hindenburg? Don't make me laugh." Then Green called Alves in and said: "Take this off the lot. Do it outside our facility." [2]
So Universal literally rejected its own film — and this wasn't an anomaly, but normal engineering assessment. Every expert Alves approached said the same thing: this needs several years. Alves, in turn, was looking for someone who had already done the impossible — and found him at Disney Studios, on the other side of Hollywood.
Robert A. Mattey Jr. started his career in the 1920s when as a 16-year-old kid he walked onto his father's set of Cecil B. DeMille's The King of Kings. In 1933 he worked on King Kong at RKO. In 1948 he created a giant mechanical octopus for John Wayne's film Wake of the Red Witch. And it was that octopus that attracted the attention of Harper Goff, Disney's production designer, who was looking for someone capable of bringing to life the giant squid for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954). [3]
When Mattey built the squid for Disney, Walt Disney immediately offered him the position of head of the Department of Mechanical Effects — the department responsible for mechanical animals in parks and films. Mattey animated hippos and elephants for Jungle Cruise, populated Rivers of America with realistic deer and bears, brought the Timothy Mouse figure to life on the Dumbo attraction. In 1955, Walt Disney personally put his name on the Main Street, USA storefront window — with the ironic subtitle "Taxidermist." [3]
And this was the man — who had spent his whole life making mechanical monsters for Disney's theme park attractions — that Alves called to build a killer shark. Mattey answered: "A shark can be built" — and took on the work. According to Alves' recollections: "That was probably November 1973. The book came out in February 1974. The studio said: we're starting shooting in two months. And that's exactly why we had all the problems with the shark — we didn't have time to test and debug it." [1]
Universal compressed the timeline from 18 months to four. The team built three full-size sharks — each at $150,000 (which in 2026 money is equivalent to approximately $1 million, total budget ≈ $3 million in today's terms). [2][4] According to Alves himself in an interview with SYFY Wire, the configuration was: "There are three sharks, left to right, right to left that was towed, and then one on a big crane" — "Three sharks: one towed left to right, another right to left, the third hung on a big crane." [1] Meaning each shark was tailored for a specific shooting angle — they couldn't simply be "repositioned" for a new shot. Like having one car but three different steering wheels for three different roads.
The technical innards were impressive — even by today's standards. According to Architectural Digest data, each shark had: [5]
And here's where it gets really interesting. Bob Mattey used pneumatics instead of hydraulics — deliberately. Alves quote: "When you got it in the salt water, it started to affect the electrolysis. This is an engineering decision we can appreciate today. Mattey, who had worked his whole life with attractions in controlled environments, understood perfectly: pressurized oil hydraulics in the open ocean means environmental catastrophe and simultaneous failure within two hours. So all shark movement — jaw opening, tail movement, body flexing — worked on compressed air. No oil drops, no toxic fluid leaks. This decision preceded Disney Parks environmental standards by decades.
But pneumatics solved one problem and immediately created another. When the three sharks were first lowered into the salt water off Martha's Vineyard, exactly what even Mattey hadn't anticipated happened. Alves quote: "As soon as we got in the water and we start moving it around, all the old electronic stuff started getting invaded by the salt water. So we have to pull that out and redo that and then the various mechanics" — "As soon as we got in the water and started moving it around, all the old electronics started getting invaded by salt water. The sharks were never tested in salt water before being shipped to Martha's Vineyard. Kevin Pike, working on his first film at the time, recalls: "When the sharks first arrived in Martha's Vineyard, Pike asked if they had been tested in the water yet. The answer was no". [2] It's like building a spacecraft, checking it in the assembly shop — and sending it to launch, bypassing the test stand.
June, July, August 1974. Filming officially began May 2, but the schedule fell apart almost immediately. From Joe Alves' SYFY Wire interview: [1]
"Come June, July, August… suddenly, there's all these boats from Hyannis and all over sailing around, and Steven wanted them totally isolated. So not only did we have a water problem or a shark problem, we had boat problems. And so we had to wait till they moved out of the way. Some people cooperated; some people didn't. So a lot of that delay in the shooting was waiting to get a clear shot with no boats on the horizon."
"Suddenly all these boats from Hyannis and everywhere appeared, and Steven wanted it completely empty. So we didn't just have a water problem or a shark problem — we had a boat problem. Had to wait for them to leave. Some cooperated, some didn't. A huge part of the delays was just waiting for a clear horizon without yachts."
Simultaneously with the tourist boats, salt water did its work. According to crew member recollections and JAWS Archive records, recurring failures included: [6]
Worse: even when the shark looked right on deck, it often behaved completely differently once lowered into water. Reliability on land didn't predict reliability at depth.
According to Variety: [7]
"For weeks, the cast and crew of 'Jaws' kept hearing the same four words over their walkie-talkies while shooting the film's climactic ocean battle: 'The shark's not working.' That familiar message terrified Steven Spielberg, 27 years old at the time, with only one theatrical feature to his name. If one of the production's three animatronic great whites broke down, it could mean another wasted day. All the setbacks put the film more than 100 days behind schedule and doubled its budget to $8 million."
Meaning "the shark's not working" was standard radio traffic that everyone on set heard. According to various sources, the budget ballooned from $3.5–4 million to $8 million (Variety) or $9 million (Architectural Digest), and the shooting schedule stretched from 55 to 159 days — almost three times. [5][7] According to producer William Gilmore's calculations in an interview with the Vineyard Gazette in July 1974, each shooting day cost $30,000, and at that point the project had already exceeded the initial estimate by $100,000 — which in 2026 terms is equivalent to approximately $2 million per day. From Richard Dreyfuss' recollections in Top10Films, almost verbatim: [9]

This isn't hyperbole. By modern film production standards, where shooting begins only after the final script draft, storyboards for every shot, and a 16-week production schedule, the Jaws situation looks like controlled chaos. But this wasn't an anomaly — it was typical mid-1970s Hollywood production — Universal simply didn't see the project as "big." Internal bets were on "The Hindenburg."
And here's where the inversion happens, the reason this whole story was written. When Alves and Spielberg realized the shark systematically didn't work in water, they made a decision that would flip the language of thrillers for half a century: stop showing it.
Spielberg quote from an interview cited in the Pat Jankiewicz archive (author of the compendium "Just When You Thought It Was Safe"): [2]
"I think the film would have made half the money had the shark worked."

This is perhaps the most counter-intuitive quote in all Hollywood folklore. A director publicly admits that a broken tool made his film better. And this isn't post-facto bravado — this is a structural rule of cinema.
Before Jaws, the monster in a horror film always had to be shown — otherwise the audience won't believe. After Jaws, the reverse formula appeared: the scariest thing is what you don't see. The barrel slowly drifting across the water. The trembling dorsal fin cutting the surface. Characters' ragged reactions to off-screen sound. Scheider's look at his wife and child on shore — then a look down into the water. Cinematographer Michael Chapman's camera holding empty water in frame for 8–10 seconds, forcing the viewer to draw the shark in their own imagination.
Alves later admitted: [2]
"I did all the sketches, I did 300 storyboards to Jaws, and I think we showed it too much."

So even Alves, who built the shark, admits: even the scenes where it did appear were too many. The real masterpiece is the first two-thirds of the film, where there's no shark at all. Quint's barrel cutting through the water, and John Williams' score with two notes (E and F) — that's the shark. It lives in the viewer's head, not on screen.
And one more detail that perfectly rhymes with this whole story. Richard Dreyfuss, who played oceanographer Hooper, recalls one specific day in a Top10Films interview: [9]

This isn't a joke or metaphor. In the middle of filming, the "Orca" — Quint's fishing vessel where the main ocean scenes were shot — actually almost sank. According to Dreyfuss' recollections, 17,000 rescue boats were cruising around, Spielberg stood with a megaphone shouting: "Get the actors off the boat!" — and Dreyfuss at that moment was trying to pull over the rail a 70-year-old sound man with a $50,000 Nagra recorder. The second Nagra drowned. The Orca nearly capsized.
And at that moment Robert Shaw, playing Quint, in full character costume buttoned his shirt, put on his hat, and folded his arms on the boat's bow. As Dreyfuss recalls: "He decided that if he was going to drown in the Atlantic, he was going to be neat" — "He decided that if he was fated to drown in the Atlantic, at least he'd look proper."
This is one of those scenes that didn't make the film — because the shark finally started working, and they had to shoot it before it broke again. But the meme "The shark is working, the ship is sinking" — is the perfect metaphor for the entire production. Universal wanted to make a movie about a shark — and instead made a movie about how the shark sinks along with the ship, crew, and budget. And from this very paradox came a film that earned $476 million in summer 1975 ($2.7 billion adjusted to 2026), won three Oscars and a Best Picture nomination — losing only to "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." [5]
All three original sharks used in filming were destroyed after production ended — standard practice for 1970s special effects models (studios didn't want to pay for storage). But when the film became a box office phenomenon, Universal decided to build a fourth shark — a copy from the original mold — for display on the Studio Tour in Hollywood. [10]
This fourth shark spent 15 years at Universal Studios Hollywood as a photo attraction for tourists, until at some point it was sold and ended up at a junkyard in Sun Valley, California — where it spent the next 25 years under the California sun. It was found and donated to the Academy Museum by Nathan Adlen, who inherited the family business selling used equipment. [10]
This shark isn't "Bruce" from the film. It's his replica. But it's the only survivor. And it weighs 1,208 pounds (548 kg), measures 25 feet (7.6 m) long, and has 116 teeth. [10]
In 2016, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences received the shark as a gift. Starting in 2019, it was restored by Greg Nicotero — the legendary special effects master (The Walking Dead, Day of the Dead), who as a child saw Jaws at age 12, and his mom tried to cover his eyes during the scene where the shark devours Quint. Nicotero recalls: "[Jaws] was the movie that made me want to do special effects, because I was fascinated that there was a bunch of dudes hanging out that built this" — "This was the film that made me want to do special effects, because I was fascinated that there was a bunch of guys who built all this." [11]
Restoration took seven months. Transport to the museum was a separate engineering challenge: the shark's fins wouldn't fit through the building, so they had to remove two glass panels at the third floor level. The shark itself was suspended on five cables (each of which would hold its weight even if the others failed) and lifted onto the truss remotely. [10] Architect Renzo Piano (Pritzker Prize laureate), who designed the museum building, specifically calculated load-bearing structures for large exhibits — but even he didn't expect this scale.
November 20, 2020, the shark was lifted under the ceiling. April 30, 2021, the museum opened. And now above the main escalator, in the "spine" of the building facing east, hangs the shark that nobody could make work 45 years ago. [10]
And here's one more detail that puts the period. According to Alves, to the question "Why did the shark scare people if it didn't work?" he has a simple answer: [2]

Because "worked" and "scared" are two different metrics. Engineering functionality is measured by shot continuity, time without breakdowns, number of saved days. And scary capability is measured by how deeply the viewer believed this thing was real. And "Bruce" lost brilliantly by the first metric — and won crushingly by the second.
I'm an engineer, and I have professional tunnel vision about this story — I see it primarily as a story about how a failed prototype became a systemic architectural solution. And here's why it gets to me.
First — and most important — this is an example of an engineering failure that birthed a genre. Mattey and Alves did everything they could under time pressure: pneumatics instead of hydraulics, remote valves, double teeth, two sets of skin. They were right about everything — except one thing: they tried to make a shark that looks real in every shot. Spielberg realized during filming that what scares the viewer isn't the shark in frame — it's the shark's absence while expecting its appearance. The transition from "show the monster" to "make the viewer draw the monster themselves" is no less revolutionary an invention than the transition from silent to sound cinema or from 2D to 3D. And it was born not from a design decision, but from equipment failure.
Second — this is a story about trusting an imperfect tool. Spielberg didn't throw out the shark and reshoot everything on a soundstage. He accepted the limitations and started shooting walk-and-talk scenes — Brody, Quint and Hooper at the dock, conversations, characters, dialogue. These scenes took up so much space in the film that ultimately we know the characters better than the monster itself. Just as in "2001: A Space Odyssey" HAL 9000 scares us not by what it does but by how calmly it speaks — Jaws scares by how casually Brody gets nervous on the beach. Without the broken shark, these scenes would be orders of magnitude fewer.
Third — this is an engineering rule that's universal for any development. Mattey built the shark in 4 months instead of 18. Universal demanded timeline compression because Benchley's bestseller was knocking at the window. When you compress R&D by a factor of 4, you don't get 4x acceleration — you get a product that will fail at the most critical moment, in the most unsuitable environment. That's exactly what happened. And Universal could have walked away from the project — Variety explicitly writes that rumors circulated about shutting down production. But the studio didn't do it. And got a film that changed the industry. Meaning sometimes a broken prototype, not perfected, turns out better than the ideal one, because it forces you to look for unconventional moves.
Fourth and last — this is the legacy that hangs from the museum ceiling. In 2026, anyone visiting the Academy Museum can see "Bruce" — for free, without buying a ticket. The shark weighs half a ton, has 116 teeth, was restored for seven months, and finally "works" — hangs and scares exactly as it should have scared 50 years ago. Only now it doesn't sink in salt water and doesn't rust from electrolysis. It became an exhibit. Meaning "Bruce's" life cycle is the perfect metaphor for Hollywood in general: first you're a broken tool that disrupts filming, then an inconvenient exhibit thrown on a junkyard, then a sacred artifact hanging from the ceiling of the world's main cinema museum.
I like this story because it shows: real engineering isn't when everything works according to plan. It's when what broke forces you to rewrite the plan itself. Bob Mattey built a shark that didn't work. Steven Spielberg made a film that's worked for half a century.
