Hook: Last night’s algorithm dropped a "Random Movie of the Day" — Breakheart Pass (1975, directed by Tom Gries, screenplay based on Alistair MacLean’s 1974 novel of the same name). At first glance, it’s a standard detective-western on a train: Charles Bronson as the convict Deakin, a train carrying vaccines for a besieged garrison, passengers dropping dead one by one, Indians outside. I almost scrolled past — MacLean churned out dozens of formulaic thrillers about planes, trains, and submarines. But something scratched at me: 1873 on the Wild West — that’s the year the Modoc War (1872–1873) had just ended. The smallest Indian uprising in U.S. history (52 warriors against 1000+ soldiers), yet with the longest siege (6 months in lava caves) and the only case where Native Americans were tried as war criminals. Plus, the novel uses the same timeline and even a character’s name — Fairchild (the governor of Nevada in the film; John Fairchild in the Modoc War was the rancher where the peace commission convened before General Canby’s murder). I got hooked: either this is direct inspiration, or the chain of coincidences is too dense to be random. Time to dig.
In Breakheart Pass, the "train with medicine for the military garrison at the pass" is a setup. The garrison isn’t sick. The train is needed to transport stolen gold through the pass under the guise of a pharmaceutical shipment, banking on priority passage through territory where Indians are waging a "siege." The murders of passengers on board are witness eliminations. Bronson’s Deakin, a prisoner being transported to prison on the train, is the only one who starts unraveling the conspiracy.
MacLean, a Scotsman who settled in Los Angeles, wrote the novel in the offices of 20th Century Fox between 1973 and 1974 as "therapy" for marital problems and alcoholism, according to producer Elliott Kastner. The book was published in 1974, the film in 1975. This was his mid-period — after The Guns of Navarone (1957) and Where Eagles Dare (1968), but before his later novels. Nothing particularly outstanding — a standard MacLean "locked-room-in-transit" thriller.
But the scenography — the train, serums, military garrison, 1873, Indians on the pass — is a cast of reality, not fiction. And that’s where things get interesting.
The Modoc War took place exactly when MacLean sets the action:
The Modoc War didn’t fade from memory — it was in the news in 1972–1973, when MacLean was writing the novel. The murder of a general during negotiations was one of the most dramatic episodes of the Western genre. Now look at the novel:
This isn’t direct borrowing — there’s no evidence that MacLean specifically drew from the Modoc War. But the density of coincidences per square kilometer of text is such that, culturally, the film functions as an "echo of the Modoc War": a 1973 Hollywood screenwriter unconsciously projected the most notorious small war of the American frontier onto the standard MacLean "train-under-siege" template. Moreover, the film portrays the Indians not as aggressors, but as dupes: they’re "hired" or "provoked" to block the pass — meaning the Modocs in the film become tools of someone else’s deception. That’s exactly what happened to the real Modocs: they were manipulated by white politicians, their own tribe, and the army command.
This is the juiciest part. According to the plot, the train is carrying a liquid serum (or vaccine) — a thermolabile drug. For 1873, this is a nearly impossible task:
In other words, the film presents a physically impossible situation: a train carrying liquid serum into the mountains during a snowstorm without refrigeration. MacLean used a trope without considering the engineering side. But it’s precisely this engineering impossibility that makes the film a perfect lens for discussing the main logistical challenge of 19th-century medicine — how to deliver "fragile biological material" to an isolated garrison.
1873 on the American frontier was the tail end of a long series of smallpox epidemics that swept the Great Plains starting in 1837:
U.S. Army garrisons on the frontier constantly teetered on the brink of epidemic: recruits from eastern states weren’t vaccinated, Indians brought diseases, and traders transported contaminated goods. Delivering vaccines to a garrison was a routine, annual, high-risk operation. MacLean, of course, took this from real life — but flipped the script: instead of carrying a real vaccine, the villains transport stolen gold under the guise of a vaccine. The deception works precisely because vaccines were actually transported to garrisons — and given priority passage.
Parallel to the epidemics in the West was the railroad revolution, and the two stories intersected at one point — mountain-pass narrow-gauge lines.

Why does this matter here? Narrow-gauge railroads were built specifically to supply mountain mines and military posts. Every branch had connections to garrisons. In other words, the "train with vaccines to the pass" is a direct function of narrow-gauge railroads, not a description of an abstract frontier. By setting the action in 1873, MacLean landed in the exact moment of an engineering revolution: the transcontinental railroad had been completed two years earlier (1869), but mountain narrow-gauge lines were still under construction. Their chief architect, Palmer, started the D&RG in 1870 — the novel’s action takes place three years later.
The juiciest part. The problem the Breakheart Pass train couldn’t solve in 1873 still isn’t fully solved in 2024. Delivering a thermolabile biological drug to an isolated garrison/village is the same challenge it was 150 years ago:

The 2021 challenge is identical to the 1873 one: how to deliver a thermolabile drug through mountains/deserts/jungles to an isolated garrison/village?
And now — the non-obvious connection we’ve been digging for. The same topology runs through all three stories:
What unites them: All three are logistics problems where the "last mile" costs more than the entire preceding chain. In 1873, the last mile was solved by horse; in 2024, by drone — but the obstacle’s topology hasn’t changed: fragile cargo → dangerous/remote zone → the need to guarantee cargo integrity upon delivery. Integrity isn’t just about temperature; it’s also about trust: the train’s passengers weren’t supposed to know about the gold, vaccines weren’t supposed to be mixed up, and the drone wasn’t supposed to lose its cargo.
For me personally, this topic is an example of how a random artifact of mass culture (a mediocre 1975 Bronson film) turns out to be a mirror reflecting 150 years of medical and engineering logistics. Without thinking, MacLean projected three real topologies onto 1873: a military garrison at a pass (a standard frontier situation), narrow-gauge railroads as a new engineering standard (just being built at the time), and the threat of epidemics (a chronic reality of the 1870s). The result was implausible in details (liquid serums in a mountain train without refrigeration) but structurally accurate.
And here’s what struck me the most. The Modoc War is the smallest Indian war in U.S. history (52 warriors against 1000+ soldiers). It doesn’t compare in scale to the War of the Five Tribes or the Battle of Little Bighorn. But it’s the most documented, because it’s the only one where Indians were tried as war criminals — leaving a full trial record. If MacLean really drew from the Modocs (and I think he did, unconsciously), he chose the strangest and most architecturally interesting war because it contains betrayal at negotiations, a 6-month siege, a legal quirk, and 52 fighters defeating a regular army by knowing the landscape. It’s the same "engineering with limited resources" as Zipline drones in Rwanda in 2024.

Bronson’s 1873 train and the 2024 Zipline drone are two different vehicles for the same pattern: "deliver the fragile through the dangerous." And in both cases, the fragile isn’t metal or weapons — it’s biological material on which someone’s life depends.
One last detail that struck me: at the time of filming (1975), Bronson was 53, and Jill Ireland (his real-life wife) played a woman suspected of conspiracy in the film. They met in 1966 on the set of The Great Escape (directed by the same John Sturges) and married in 1968. She died of breast cancer in 1990, 15 years after this film. In the film, her character dies near the end — meaning MacLean, without overthinking it, wrote a prophecy without knowing it. Bronson died in 2003, 28 years after the film. Cinema sometimes works like a random time machine.
