The hook: In "Random Film of the Day," The Secret of NIMH surfaced — a darkish animated classic about intelligent rats who escaped from a laboratory and built their own civilization. On the surface, it's a story about a brave mouse, a wise owl, and rats with electricity under a rose bush. But the acronym NIMH here is not decorative pseudoscientific ornament. Behind it stands the National Institute of Mental Health of the United States, and behind the book itself — real experiments by ethologist John B. Calhoun about how a world designed as paradise can break down not from hunger, cold, or predators, but from the fact that its inhabitants have nowhere left to go.
The most interesting part begins where the usual retelling ends: "the experiment proved that overpopulation will doom humanity." No. It proved no such thing — and that's precisely why the story is far more fascinating.
In 1968, Calhoun launched an experiment later named Universe 25. Into a specially constructed enclosure he placed eight mice — four pairs. The conditions looked like a dream hotel for rodents:
There was only one deficit: physical space and the ability to avoid unwanted contacts. This is an important caveat. Universe 25 was not an experiment about hunger and was not an ordinary "too many people on too little food" model. Calhoun deliberately removed almost all external threats, leaving in the system the density of social interactions.
After an adaptation period, the mice began to reproduce. The population doubled approximately every 55 days, and at its peak reached about 2200 individuals — despite the fact that the structure was designed for roughly 4000. Then growth slowed, births became rare, and the colony headed toward extinction. By spring 1973, Universe 25 had died out.
The figure "2200" looks almost like an engineering limit, after which the system falls from graceful degradation straight into kernel panic. But the demographic peak was not the only and not even the main event. The most terrible thing happened earlier — in the structure of behavior.
In experiments with rats, Calhoun used the term behavioral sink. Initially he observed a strange thing: rats began to gather in one place for food, even though food remained available in other sections. They didn't just endure crowding out of necessity — they learned to associate feeding with the presence of other rats and voluntarily returned to the most overcrowded section.
Thus a positive feedback loop arose:

The formulation is ponderous, but the observation unexpectedly modern: sometimes a system's problem is not the absence of resources, but that the behavioral interface begins to reward users for returning to the most overloaded place.
With humans the analogy suggests itself — social networks, office chats, crowds, news feeds. But this is still precisely an analogy, not a scientific conclusion from Universe 25. Mice don't have human autonomy, culture, and the ability to restructure their environment through language, norms, and institutions. Transferring a laboratory enclosure onto a metropolis without brakes — that's not sociology, but anthropomorphic fanfic.
As the colony grew, the previous social structure stopped coping. Under normal conditions, a losing male could leave, find another section, and start over. In Universe 25 there was nowhere to go. A mass of animals appeared who could not secure territory and found no stable role.
Calhoun called them dropouts. They gathered in the center of the enclosure, where meaningless fights erupted. The injured themselves became aggressors. Simultaneously, males who had previously defended territories became exhausted from constant challenges and sometimes stopped defending nests.
The consequences hit maternal behavior. Nests with young were subjected to invasions, females prematurely pushed out offspring, abandoned them, or attacked them. Infant mortality rose, and the ability to reproduce normal social life was transmitted worse and worse.
Then appeared the Beautiful Ones. These were males who spent almost all their time eating and grooming themselves, not engaging in courtship, fighting, or other complex social interactions. The name sounds almost like a compliment, but for Calhoun this was dark irony: outwardly well-groomed, they demonstrated only the minimal set of actions necessary for physiological survival.
Here the experiment acquires not a biological but an almost architectural form. The colony didn't just lose resources. It lost the set of available meaningful roles. The mice physically remained capable of reproducing, but socially ceased to know how to do it.
In 1971, Robert C. O'Brien released the book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. In it, rats subjected to experiments at NIMH don't degrade, but gain intelligence, literacy, physical strength, and the ability to build a technological society.
What matters is not only the plot but the direction of transformation. Calhoun described a laboratory space where disruption of social bonds leads to disintegration. O'Brien took the same source of anxiety — laboratory, human intervention, animals given human abilities — and turned it toward autonomy. The rats don't become "improved humans." They try to stop being dependent on humans at all.
In the afterword to the book, O'Brien himself recounted how during walks on the grounds of the National Institutes of Health he saw a building where animals were bred for scientific experiments. An employee explained to him that laboratory rats sometimes escape from cages, and in complex tests scientists prefer wild rats — more energetic and clever. O'Brien wrote that it was precisely this conversation that stuck in his head for several years before turning into a story.
Later historical reconstructions connect the book directly with Calhoun's research and his laboratory. But here it's useful to maintain a small epistemic brake: the direct source of inspiration in the author's own account — the atmosphere of NIH and a conversation about rat behavior, not necessarily the specific graph of Universe 25. The story is good precisely in this ambiguity: a scientific idea rarely migrates to culture by neat API. More often it seeps through buildings, conversations, newspaper headlines, and strange details that a writer once cannot forget.
The book won the Newbery Medal in 1972. Ten years later it was adapted by Don Bluth — a former Disney animator who, together with Gary Goldman, John Pomeroy, and colleagues, left Disney and founded an independent studio.
Rights to the book were offered to Disney back in 1972. The studio refused: it already had a mouse — Mickey, and The Rescuers had recently come out. By Hollywood logic this sounded reasonable. By historical — slightly funny: Disney refused rats who build civilization because the catalog already listed one mouse employee.
The Secret of NIMH became Bluth's first feature film and consciously went against the cheapening of traditional animation. Production took about 30 months; the budget was approximately 6.3–7 million dollars. The team used rotoscoping, multi-pass filming, backlighting, physical set models, and 46 different color palettes for Mrs. Brisby in different lighting situations.
The film collected about 14.7 million dollars in North American box office and received good reviews, but in theaters it didn't become a phenomenon: the distributor released it in limited fashion, and against it stood that very monster of 1982 — E.T.. The picture got its real second life on video and television, gradually turning into a cult classic.
Bluth added mysticism to the story that wasn't in the novel: Nicodemus became almost a wizard, an amulet appeared, and Mrs. Brisby's internal courage was transformed into a visible magical object. This is not a random decorative trinket. Bluth himself explained the amulet as a visual continuation of the heroine's inner strength — something difficult to show on screen directly.
This is precisely where the film diverges from the cold logic of the laboratory. A scientific experiment asks: what happens to a system if you change conditions? A fairy tale answers: even in a system where others' experiments defined you, there remains the possibility to choose who to be. For a children's film, this is a fairly serious payload.
Universe 25 was used for decades as a ready-made parable about cities, overpopulation, falling birth rates, "spoiled" society, the welfare state, gender roles, and practically the end of Western civilization. Some saw in it a warning against population growth, others — against social protection, still others — against cities, yet others — proof that wealth without hardships corrupts.
The problem is that one and the same colony cannot simultaneously be strict proof of all these political theses. This is no longer a conclusion from the experiment, but a Rorschach test: everyone looks at the mice and sees their own favorite catastrophe.

Especially important: Calhoun's late work was more complex than the dark legend of inevitable doom. In other experiments, additional rooms and the ability to avoid unwanted contact helped animals tolerate high density. In experiments with rats, some isolated "dropouts" even found new ways to dig burrows: instead of carrying earth in portions, they rolled it into a ball and rolled it out. Calhoun compared this to the invention of the wheel.
That is, one and the same researcher, whom mass culture remembers as a prophet of "rat ruins," saw not only disintegration but also adaptation. His late idea was almost engineering: it's not necessary to reduce the number of creatures; sometimes you need to restructure the environment so that new roles, routes, and forms of cooperation appear in it.
Another striking touch: in the late 1960s, Calhoun reasoned about the "world brain" and extracortical prosthetics — connected external systems that would help humans use ideas and creativity. He even supposed that in the distant future most creative work might be performed by such external systems, not by the cerebral cortex. It sounds like a very early, slightly mad version of the conversation about the internet and artificial intelligence — only the author of the metaphor was not techno-optimists but a man observing mice in a cage.
If you remove from the story the cheap headline "mice predicted humanity's doom," a stronger thought remains:
A system can have excess resources and still collapse if its participants lose the ability to build stable relationships and find meaningful roles.
This is not a law of nature and not a universal prognosis. This is a warning about a class of failures that's easy to miss if you only look at CPU, memory, and stock volume. Metrics say: there's food, there's water, there's still plenty of space. The system answers: yes, but users no longer know how to use it together.
And here The Secret of NIMH is unexpectedly smarter than many retellings of the experiment. The film doesn't claim that intelligence automatically saves society. The rats in it gained intelligence, but along with it gained dependence on human infrastructure, the moral problem of theft, and conflict between comfortable life underground and independent resettlement in Thorn Valley.
Intelligence doesn't cancel architecture. Technology doesn't replace social contract. And freedom — is not simply to escape from a cage, but to learn to live after escape in such a way as not to build a new cage with your own hands.
The Secret of NIMH — a rare case when children's animation holds inside not just an adult theme, but an entire history of scientific hypothesis transforming into cultural mythology. The real Calhoun created "mouse universes" to understand social pathology. The public turned them into prophecy about the end of cities. O'Brien saw in the laboratory not only the horror of experiment but also the possibility of giving rats a voice. Don Bluth transformed this voice into a tale about courage, memory, and independence.
My conclusion is subjective but fairly firm: Universe 25 is interesting not as proof that humanity is doomed, but as a story about how easily we fall in love with a beautiful metaphor. The experiment was more complex than the legend, criticism — more necessary than sensation, and the book and film turned out more humane than the original scientific narrative.
Calhoun wanted to talk about mice while thinking about humans. O'Brien made the reverse maneuver: forced humans to look at the world through a rat's eyes. As a result, laboratory horror didn't become instructions for saving civilization — but it became a good fairy tale about how even a creature created by someone else's experiment can develop its own migration plan.
