In 1746, a Swede could lose their kitchenware for a cup of coffee. In 2026, Sweden is the world's third-largest consumer of this beverage. Between these two points lies the story of an experiment that proved the opposite of its intent, and a king who was killed before his test subjects died of old age.
Coffee arrived in Sweden in the 17th century as a commodity of colonial trade, but by the mid-18th, the crown saw it as a double threat. The first was economic: money was flowing abroad, and coffeehouses were becoming places where artisans and small traders discussed politics instead of working. The second was medical—or rather, pseudo-medical: physicians of the time believed coffee caused nervous disorders, infertility, and premature aging.
Gustav III, who ascended the throne in 1771, inherited not only the crown but also his predecessors' obsession with eradicating coffee culture. Before him, Sweden had imposed bans on coffee five times—in 1746, 1756, 1766, 1777, and 1794 (the last one after Gustav's death). Each time, the ban accumulated new sanctions: confiscation of utensils, fines, prison sentences for coffeehouse owners. But each time, underground trade returned, like water finding a crack in a dam.
The king decided to act not with decrees, but with evidence. He needed an experiment that would settle the question of coffee's harm once and for all. Not philosophical arguments, not testimonies from court physicians—a fact, documented through observation. Gustav was a monarch of the Enlightenment era, an admirer of Voltaire, a theater lover, and a reformer. He believed truth was obtained through method, not tradition. But the method he chose was one that would later be called "scientific cruelty."
In Stockholm's prison sat two men sentenced to death—identical twins. Their crime is unknown, their names lost (or deliberately erased—the archives of that time are full of gaps). Gustav offered them a deal: the death sentence would be commuted to life imprisonment, but with a condition. One would drink three pots (an old Swedish measure, approximately 0.9 liters) of coffee per day. The other—the same amount of tea. For the rest of their lives. Under observation by two court physicians who would document every change in their condition.
This was one of the first controlled medical experiments in history—with a control group, repeatable conditions, observers. Gustav didn't know about placebos, double-blind methods, or statistical significance, but he intuitively grasped a scheme that would become the standard for clinical trials 200 years later. Of course, a standard without an ethics committee, informed consent, or the right to refuse.
The twins agreed. The alternative—the executioner's axe—left no choice. They were placed in separate cells, where every morning, afternoon, and evening they were brought a hot beverage in identical mugs. The physicians recorded pulse, skin color, mood, appetite, bowel frequency. The king waited for one of the twins to begin weakening, losing weight, losing his mind—proof he could present to the skeptics.
But their bodies didn't obey the hypothesis. Years passed, the twins aged in sync. No ulcers, seizures, sudden fainting spells. The physicians continued recording, but the records became monotonous, like a calendar.
The physicians died first. The exact dates are unknown, but both passed away before 1792—the year the experiment's commissioner himself ceased to exist. On March 16, 1792, at a masquerade ball at the Royal Opera, officer Jacob Johan Anckarström shot Gustav in the back with a pistol. The king died 13 days later from an infected wound—antiseptics hadn't been invented yet, and the bullet had shattered a vertebra and carried particles of fabric and gunpowder into the tissue.
Gustav didn't live to see the result of his experiment. But the experiment continued. The twins remained in their cells, coffee and tea kept being delivered—by the inertia of a prison system that didn't know how to stop the process without the king's order. The new authorities—the regency council for the underage Gustav IV Adolf—weren't interested in their predecessor's scientific pursuits. The twins became an anachronism, living monuments to someone else's obsession.
The one who drank tea died first. At age 83, of old age. No records of the cause survive—perhaps they weren't even kept by that point. The second twin, the one who drank coffee, lived even longer. Exactly how much longer is unknown, but the fact of his survival was recorded in several 19th-century sources as a curiosity, as an irony of fate.
The experiment failed not because the methodology was poor—it was revolutionary for its time. It failed because the hypothesis was false.
After Gustav's death, Sweden tried to ban coffee twice more—in 1794 and 1799. But each new ban lasted less than the previous one. The state couldn't defeat a beverage that by then was consumed by a third of the population. Smuggling became so widespread that customs officers couldn't keep up. Coffeehouses closed, but people drank coffee at home, in workshops, at markets—from clay cups, from wooden mugs, from metal pots.
By the 1820s, the crown capitulated. The last ban was lifted not because medicine suddenly recognized coffee as beneficial—the state simply tired of warring with economics. Import taxes remained, but criminal prosecution ceased. Sweden began transforming into a coffee nation not by decree, but despite decrees.
By the end of the 19th century, Sweden was already among the top ten coffee consumers in Europe. In the 1920s, the tradition of fika appeared—a social coffee-and-pastry break that became part of the national identity. In the 2020s, Sweden consumes about 8.2 kilograms of coffee per capita per year—third place in the world after Finland and Norway.
Gustav wanted to prove that coffee kills. History proved the opposite: coffee turned out to be more resilient than kings, physicians, and bans. The twins outlived their judges, executioners, and observers, not because of coffee or tea—but despite the experiment that turned them into instruments of someone else's paranoia.
Today, Gustav III's experiment is mentioned in medical history textbooks as an example of how not to conduct research. Sweden no longer bans coffee. But every time Swedes pour themselves a morning cup, they participate in an experiment that began 250 years ago and still hasn't concluded. Except now the test subjects aren't prisoners, but volunteers. And instead of a king, they're observed by epidemiologists who know: the truth isn't in three pots of coffee, but in millions of cups drunk by millions of people over generations. Gustav sought an answer in two lives. Science found it in population statistics, where each cup is a data point, not a sentence.
