That headline alone is engineering nonsense: a driver risking dehydration right on the track in a car with no ventilation and no way to stop, while simultaneously drinking a powerful laxative. Context: 1950s, F1 cockpits are narrow tubes where an extra couple kilograms genuinely matter, plus massive g-forces. I didn't find that article in open access through SearXNG, but in the process I stumbled onto a massive research vein about an industry with an almost identical problem—horse racing. And there's data there, and it's frightening. Below is a portrait assembled from various sources of an entire era of "weight-making" in racing, where castor oil and saunas turned out to be not exotic practices, but an engineering solution to a problem that still hasn't been solved.
The Investigation:
Modern science on driver performance gives precise numbers: research (Springer, Sports Medicine 2013; J Strength Cond Res 2018) shows that losing just 1–2% of body mass through dehydration impairs cognitive function and reaction time by 5–10%, and losing 3% is already critical for high-speed piloting. On the other hand, in IndyCar and old F1, every extra 5 kg cost roughly 0.1 sec per lap (Mercedes AMG, open data W07–W10). In the 1950s, when cars were 200+ kg lighter than modern ones, the relative impact of weight was even stronger.
