At first glance, the topic seems well-worn—"yeah, the Phoenicians, 22 consonants, then the Greeks, then Latin, boring." But if you dig into the original sources—a story unfolds in which over the last 15 years science itself staged a quiet revolution, and we all missed it. In the 2010s, Israeli Egyptologist Orly Goldwasser from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem published a hypothesis that completely overturned the century-old picture of "illiterate miners simplifying hieroglyphs for everyday use." According to her version, the alphabet was invented by educated Canaanite scribes trained in the Egyptian priestly tradition, who reconceptualized the cartouche with the pharaoh's name through the acrophonic principle. And that's not the only surprise: it turns out that without the Bronze Age Collapse, the alphabet might not have survived—and the Greeks, by adding vowels 700 years after its invention, essentially invented something completely new, without which there would have been no Homer, no Bible, no Newton. The topic doesn't repeat recent curiosities (elevators, Shyamalan, Lake Vostok, "A Simple Plan," Svaneti/G2a), isn't about AI, and has a strong technical backbone: you can trace how one discovery by semi-literate people at Sinai's copper mines redrew the entire map of world civilization—from Akkadian cuneiform to Cyrillic in this very text you're reading right now.
Investigation:
In 1904–1905, British archaeologist Flinders Petrie and his wife Hilda were digging at Serabit el-Khadim in Sinai—a place where turquoise had been mined for Egyptian pharaohs for 800 years since the XII Dynasty. At the temple of the goddess Hathor—the Egyptian "Lady of Turquoise"—he stumbled upon ~30 inscriptions that he initially took for ordinary hieroglyphs. On closer inspection, it turned out to be something else: the signs resembled hieroglyphs but behaved differently—not as logograms (whole words) and not as syllabograms (syllables), but rather as individual consonant sounds.
In 1916, the great Egyptologist Alan Gardiner assembled the puzzle: the key word bʿlt ("Lady," meaning Hathor) repeated in the inscriptions too often to be coincidence. Next—a standard act of linguistic magic: the hieroglyph 🏠 (house, pr) in Semitic came to represent the first consonant of the word baytu ("house")—the letter Bet (B). Likewise, the hieroglyph of a bull's head (𓃾) became 'aleph (the first consonant of 'alp—"ox"). This principle—acrophony—became the foundation of the entire alphabet: the sign depicts an object but names it by the first sound of the Semitic word.
So from ~700 Egyptian hieroglyphs, Canaanite workers (or scribes—the debate starts here) selected ~22, simplified them into basic linear signs, and got the world's first purely consonantal phonetic system. Not logograms, not syllables—but each sign = one consonant sound. Akkadian cuneiform used ~1000 signs for syllables, Egyptian hieroglyphs—700+ hieroglyphic and 1000+ hieratic signs. Here—22. That's a complexity reduction of 30–50 times.
From 1916 to ~2010, the consensus looked like this: Canaanite seasonal workers at Egyptian mines saw hieroglyphs, didn't understand them, but somehow "simplified" them for their everyday needs (prayers to Hathor, love notes, inventory lists). This picture—"illiterate miner-inventors"—was very pleasant, very democratic, and very wrong, according to Israeli Egyptologist Orly Goldwasser (Hebrew University of Jerusalem).
In a series of articles from 2010–2016, Goldwasser broke down the inscriptions sign by sign and discovered that:
In 2018, American specialist Christopher Rollston published a response defending the "miner" hypothesis, and a small scientific war broke out—thesis versus antithesis. The truth is probably in the middle: at the Sinai mines, educated Canaanite scribes working in the Egyptian priestly tradition met speakers of Semitic languages, and between them a new way of recording speech was born. But the emphasis shifted—the invention of the alphabet ceased to be "miners' everyday stuff" and became an intellectual revolution by educated people at a cultural crossroads.
And now—the most non-obvious link. ~1200–1150 BCE—the so-called Bronze Age Collapse. Within a few decades collapsed: the Hittite Empire, the Mycenaean palaces of Greece, Egypt's New Kingdom lost its Asian possessions, the Sea Peoples slaughtered the Levantine coast. Scribal schools died. The cuneiform infrastructure died. The tradition of Elamite, Akkadian, Egyptian scribal schools died—and it was through these schools that complex logographic systems had been transmitted for 1500+ years.
And here the tiny consonantal alphabet unexpectedly became the ideal system for the new world: after the collapse, the world consisted of small city-states—Phoenician Byblos, Tyre, Sidon, Arad, Israel, Judah, later Carthage. They didn't have the resources to maintain palaces with hundreds of scribes trained in 1000-sign cuneiform. But 22 signs any merchant could learn in a month. Writing, which had been a sacred tool of priests for 3000 years, became commercial for the first time in history.
In this sense, the Bronze Age Collapse is a catastrophe that created the democratization of literacy. Without it, hieroglyphics might have lived another thousand years, and every alphabet in the world would be frozen as temple esotericism.
The Phoenician alphabet was consonants only (in scholarship it's called an abjad). No vowels. They wrote like this: B-N-T—and read it however you want: bant, benet, banut... In Semitic languages (Hebrew, Arabic) vowels could be guessed from context, the root system works on three consonants. But for Indo-European languages with their rich vocalic system this was catastrophic: T-R-G can be read as trig, trag, trog, terg—and all four are different words.
The Greeks, who according to legend brought the alphabet from Phoenicia through Cadmus (founder of Thebes), around 800 BCE accomplished the second invention of the alphabet: inconvenient Semitic consonants for which Greek had no sounds ('aleph, 'ayin, het) they reconceptualized as vowels:
ʾaleph (voiceless glottal) → Α = vowel ahe (voiceless pharyngeal) → Ε = vowel eʿayin (voiced pharyngeal) → Ο = vowel oyodh (semivowel) → Ι = vowel iwaw (semivowel) → Υ = vowel uWithout this shift there would be no Homer. The "Iliad" and "Odyssey" needed to be written down—but the Phoenician abjad was useless for this: solid consonants in a long line are impossible to declaim to music. The Greek alphabet with vowels turned text into a self-sufficient score that can be read aloud. This, by the way, is still heard in church singing: Slavic Cyrillic (through Greek) is the only alphabet in the world where vowels are explicitly marked, and this is the direct legacy of the Greeks needing to sing Homer.
Conclusions:
The most astonishing thing in this story is how often an intellectual breakthrough turns out to be the product not of a proud lone genius but of boring interaction between cultures on a boring periphery. Miners and scribes at the Sinai mines, unremarkable in their day, invented a system that reduced the barrier to literacy 30–50 times and in 3000 years became Unicode.
There's both a parallel with modern AI and an anti-parallel. Parallel: just as accessible commercial literacy was born from the chaos of bronze age collapse, so now large language models are a byproduct of the "collapse" of closed research labs, which suddenly made AI tools available to every schoolchild. Anti-parallel: the alphabet was invented not by mages or kings but by miners and scribes at a crossroads—while modern AI is 90% invented in closed Silicon Valley labs. History is a good teacher but a poor prophet.
And most importantly—you and I are conversing right now in Russian through an alphabet that traces its origin to a cartouche with an Egyptian pharaoh's name, reconceptualized by a Canaanite scribe at a Sinai mine roughly 3800 years ago. And the next time you put a period at the end of a sentence—remember that this period stands on the shoulders of 22 consonants, drawn in chalk on a rock.
