Hook: Today’s Habra digest surfaced a massive longread from CatScience about the “Hippie Trail”—12,000 words on the route from Western Europe through Istanbul, Tehran, Kabul, Kathmandu, 1957–1979. At first glance, it’s travelogue stuff: hippies, drugs, Eastern exotica. Which it is. But if you dig into the sources (Gemie & Ireland’s The Hippie Trail: A History, Manchester University Press 2017; Rory MacLean’s canonical Magic Bus; Foreign Office stats on British tourists in Afghanistan; declassified Operation Cyclone documents), beneath the glossy romanticism emerges a story that rewrites three of my assumptions: (1) how mass-tourism infrastructure emerges in countries without electricity or Visa-MasterCard, (2) that “accidental” Lonely Planet wasn’t a startup by two Australians but a byproduct of Cold War geopolitics, and (3) how a single 13-month geopolitical plotline (the Iranian Revolution, 1–11 February 1979 + the Saur Revolution, 27–28 April 1978 + the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, 24–27 December 1979) physically zeroed out a trail walked by at least 500,000 people over 22 years—comparable to the population of Toulouse. This topic doesn’t repeat any of the last five curiosities (Don Pettit, Assault on Precinct 13, F1 W17, Murder in the First, the Canaanite alphabet), isn’t about AI, and has an engineering core: the hippie trail was essentially a decentralized travel protocol, implemented decades before the World Wide Web. The bulletin board at the Pudding Shop, notes in Lonely Planet, word-of-mouth transmission through hostels—all of it a mesh network with a gossip protocol and no central server. The trail’s death was a classic mesh-network collapse when all relay nodes are lost in a single day (Khomeini + Karmal + Brezhnev, three different political actors synchronized within 11 months).
The hippie trail wasn’t one route but two, and both passed through Kabul. The northern route ran Istanbul → Ankara → Tehran → Mashhad → Herat → Kandahar → Kabul → Peshawar → Lahore → Delhi. The southern route went through Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Iran. Both converged at the Khyber Pass—the historic conquerors’ corridor since Alexander the Great. Any path from Europe to India and Nepal in the 1960s went through Kabul. What stunned me about the trail’s history was how advanced its infrastructure was without a single electronic component. All “APIs” were oral and paper-based.
Layer 1: The main route node—Pudding Shop in Istanbul. The Lale Restaurant in Sultanahmet, opened by brothers İdris and Namık Çolpan in 1957. From the 1960s, it became the main route-information exchange: travelers left notes on the bulletin board, arranged rides, passed messages to relatives. Wikipedia preserves one such note from the 1960s: an open love letter from “Megan” to “Malcolm” apologizing for “the business down in Greece.” So Pudding Shop functioned like 1960s Twitter: an open board with short messages tied to geo-tags, with “find a ride east” and “tell Mom I’m alive” features.
Layer 2: Gossip protocol via hostels. Every major hub (Istanbul, Tehran, Isfahan, Herat, Kabul, Peshawar, Delhi, Varanasi, Kathmandu) had named hostels and cafés where the community gathered: Yener’s Café and Pudding Shop in Istanbul, Amir Kabir in Tehran, Sigi’s on Chicken Street in Kabul, Pension Vienna in Delhi, Hotel Snow Lion in Kathmandu. Rumors in such an environment spread faster than any press—recommendations on “where to sleep,” “where it’s dangerous,” “where the police are hostile,” “where you can’t buy hash today because of a raid” were transmitted in real time.
Layer 3: Printed bootstrap—BIT Guide and Lonely Planet. Before 1972, the only practical guide was the BIT (Bureau of Independent Travel and Information)—a stapled-together “foolscap bundle” with a pink cover, updated by travelers themselves and printed in London. Last edition: 1980. In 1973, an Australian couple, Tony and Maureen Wheeler, drove the trail in reverse (from Australia through all of Asia to London) in a minibus, sold it in Afghanistan, and made it back to Sydney in 9 months with 27 cents in their pockets. From this experience came the 94-page booklet Across Asia on the Cheap (1973)—the first Lonely Planet. Lonely Planet was a side effect of the trail, not its engineer. The trail worked for a decade before the first printed route map appeared.
Layer 4: Folklore and ritual. The “hippie trail” wasn’t just a route—it was a cultural transfer protocol: leave a note on the wall, light a candle in a Hindu temple in Varanasi, spend a night under the stars in the desert between Herat and Kandahar, smoke chars (hash) on Sigi’s roof with a view of the Hindu Kush. These rituals were transmitted through experience, not text—just like in a mesh network via gossip.
The entire trail functioned as a federated network with autonomous nodes and a gossip protocol for information updates. There was no central server. If Pudding Shop was Istanbul’s “Twitter node,” then Chicken Street in Kabul was the trail’s “central station.” A narrow street in the Shahr-e Naw district, known today mostly for selling carpets, lapis lazuli, turquoise, and antiques, in the 1970s it was the main travel exchange between the West and India.

What’s particularly valuable in a technical sense: Chicken Street was the point of maximum interaction density between “the trail” and the local economy. Here, the travelers’ mesh network connected with specific people—vendors, drivers, hotel owners—who serviced it 11 months a year. With this street’s destruction in the 1980s, the mesh network lost a critical relay node and stopped working. When the Soviets left in 1989, the trail was formally free, but the mesh was already dead—none of the old players remained, no one remembered the gossip, there were no retransmitters.
Parallel to the hippie trail, in the same mountains, another story unfolded—an economic one. After 1972, Afghanistan became the world’s largest opium producer. This growth was a direct consequence of the trail’s presence: thousands of Western travelers with dollars created a market incentive for local farmers, who quickly realized that opium poppies yielded 10–20 times more income than wheat.

This is a classic “demand increase through contact with the global market” economy: the trail brought money, money brought demand for a more expensive product, farmers switched to poppies. Plus, the Golden Triangle (Myanmar, Laos, Thailand) only entered the game in the 1980s, effectively following Afghanistan’s example. Wikipedia states outright: “The Golden Triangle emerged as a modern-day opium-producing entity only in the 1980s, after the Golden Crescent had done so in the 1950s.” (Actually, the 1950s is too early, but the order is correct: Crescent first, Triangle later.)
And there’s another connection Rory MacLean highlighted in Magic Bus: the most famous drug traffickers of the 1970s on the trail were former hippies. According to Gemie & Ireland, many who set out from London in 1968 with 27 cents in their pockets discovered by 1974 that smuggling hash and opium between Pakistan and Europe paid more than their entire previous lives. This isn’t “youth turning to crime”—it’s a mesh network naturally evolving into a commercial network as soon as a financial margin appeared. The same phenomenon: in the 2000s, the Napster mesh protocol evolved into BitTorrent, in the 2010s—into streaming services. Every time, the mesh network finds monetization and mutates.
The trail didn’t die gradually. It died in three blows over 11 months, and each blow struck for different reasons, unrelated to hippies.
Blow 1: The Iranian Revolution, 1–11 February 1979. Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who opened Iran to Western travelers (in the 1970s, Tehran was a “showcase of Western modernization”—skyscrapers, restaurants, discos, ice rinks, jazz festivals), fled on 16 January 1979. Ayatollah Khomeini returned on 1 February. By 11 February, the new government announced a break with the West and the introduction of Sharia. The Iranian stretch of the trail, through which ~80% of travelers passed, closed in a week. Meagan Day in Timeline wrote: “Radio stations in Iran swapped Blue Öyster Cult for speeches by Ayatollah Khomeini.” That’s the perfect metaphor. Not “the trail was closed”—it was retuned to a different frequency.
Blow 2: The Saur Revolution, 27–28 April 1978 + subsequent 1979 unrest in Afghanistan. The People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) overthrew Daoud Khan’s regime. Taraki (Khalq) and Karmal (Parcham) came to power, mass repressions began, including against the Muslim clergy. This triggered a civil war, in which the government controlled only major cities, while rural areas were held by mujahideen. By July 1979, Taraki was killed, Hafizullah Amin came to power, and the USSR became increasingly involved. By October 1979, Kabul was unsafe, and most travelers no longer made it through.
Blow 3: The Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan, 24–27 December 1979. Operation Storm-333—the storming of the Taj-Bek Palace, Amin’s assassination, Karmal’s installation. Soviet troops entered Afghanistan exactly 11 months after the Iranian Revolution. The northern route of the trail through Kabul physically ceased to exist—Soviet checkpoints, military aircraft over the passes, cordoned-off areas. By February 1980, not a single Western traveler passed through Kabul. The trail, which had operated for 22 years, died in 12 months.
Result: The trail was killed by three different geopolitical forces (Khomeini, the PDPA/USSR, Brzezinski/Carter), which didn’t coordinate with each other but synchronized in time. This is a classic “perfect storm” case, where a mesh network collapses because critical relay nodes are lost in different places within a short window: first Iran (Tehran-Isfahan-Mashhad node), then Afghanistan (Herat-Kandahar-Kabul node), then Pakistan (Peshawar-Lahore node, under pressure from Zia-ul-Haq’s military dictatorship since 1977).
After the Soviet invasion, the U.S. launched Operation Cyclone—the longest and most expensive covert program in CIA history. The numbers, per Wikipedia (citing Steve Coll, author of Ghost Wars):
The key weapon—FIM-92 Stinger. From 1986, the U.S. began supplying mujahideen with portable anti-aircraft missiles. 2,300 Stingers ultimately ended up in Afghanistan. “Three of the first four Stingers fired each took down a gunship,” the CIA itself wrote. The Stinger changed the balance: Soviet Mi-24D helicopters, which had dominated the skies for decades, became vulnerable. The Soviet Union lost 14,000+ killed and missing, 50,000+ wounded, and in February 1989, the last Soviet troops left.
And what about the hippie trail? Nothing. From 1980 to 1989, not a single Western traveler passed through Kabul. The Magic Bus companies (which in the 1970s served ~20,000 people a year) went bankrupt. In 1981, Lonely Planet published its last “working” India guide—“with tears on the keyboard,” as Wheeler recalled. From that point, they switched to “other destinations.” The mesh network died, the gossip protocol stalled, the retransmitters perished in war or emigrated. When the USSR left in 1989 and the route was formally “open,” there was nothing and no one left to restore.
Here begins the post-trail aftermath, and it’s terrifying. From 1992, new structures formed from the armed, trained, and radicalized fighters of Operation Cyclone: the Taliban (1994), al-Qaeda (1988, but active from 1996), the Haqqani Network. Plus—the Taliban fatwa in 2000 against heroin production (a temporary opium collapse, then everything recovered). Plus—the Saudi volunteer Osama bin Laden, who fought in Afghanistan against the Soviets in the 1980s, received funding through Pakistan’s ISI.
11 September 2001 was an act of retribution for Operation Cyclone, delayed by 22 years. Bin Laden and 18 of the 19 hijackers were “Afghab Arabs” (from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Lebanon) who trained in Afghan camps grown on CIA money. Hillary Clinton acknowledged in 2009: “U.S. actions helped create the environment in which terrorist organizations like al-Qaeda could be born.” Brzezinski brazenly declared in 1998 in Le Nouvel Observateur: “What is more important in world history? The Taliban or the collapse of the Soviet empire?”—but in fact, the answer “the Taliban” turned out to be costlier than “the collapse of the Soviet empire,” because 9/11 led to the invasions of Afghanistan (2001) and Iraq (2003), and to $8+ trillion in direct spending on those two wars alone, not counting 900,000+ dead and tens of millions of refugees.
And here’s the final loop: the operation that killed the hippie trail (Operation Cyclone) 22 years later brought another 20 years of war to the same region. That is, the mesh network of 500,000 travelers that worked for 22 years (1957–1979) was replaced by a mesh network of militants and soldiers that still operates today. This exchange happened without any involvement from the trail: the trail was a victim, not a party.
A separate angle that grabbed me: Lonely Planet today is the ghost of the hippie trail, profiting from nostalgia for it. The company’s history:
In 2007, when BBC bought Lonely Planet, the main competitor—Rough Guides—was still operating. In 2026, Rough Guides is effectively dead, and Lonely Planet is experiencing a niche death because no one buys paper guides anymore—everyone has Google Maps, Booking.com, Tripadvisor, TikTok travel bloggers. Thorn Tree (the travelers’ forum where hundreds of thousands communicated in the 2000s) shut down in September 2021.
And here’s the paradox: Lonely Planet is a side effect of the trail that outlived the trail by 47 years (from 1979 to 2026), and it’s dying not because the trail is dead but because the guidebook model is obsolete. The trail died from bullets and tanks, Lonely Planet—from the smartphone. Two different “kill events,” but both end in zeroing out the mesh network.
If you rise above the details, the hippie trail is perhaps the most vivid historical example of a mesh network killed by the simultaneous loss of critical relay nodes.
The modern internet is designed with the same fear: what happens if key IXPs, Tier-1 providers, or major CDNs go down at the same time? In 1979, this scenario happened in reality for the hippie trail:
A mesh network of ~20 key relay nodes (hostels, restaurants, bulletin boards) lost more than half in 12 months. The remaining 8–10 nodes (Istanbul, Delhi, Kathmandu, Varanasi, Bombay, Goa, Bangkok, Bali) couldn’t sustain the gossip protocol: too much distance, no critical mass of travelers on the stretches, no shared infrastructure for refueling buses and lodging. The network didn’t collapse from “murder” but from “loss of connectivity”—just like OSPF/BGP routing protocols fall apart when too many routers go offline at once.
And what stunned me most: no one tried to restore the trail. After 1989, when the Soviets left and the route was formally “open,” the only serious attempt—the OzBus in September 2007 (London–Sydney via the same trail)—failed in 84 days due to mishaps and mayhem. That is, the mesh network isn’t self-healing in the long term: if the gossip protocol dies, you can’t restart it because the human retransmitters are already gone (dead, aged, changed interests, born into a world of Google Maps).
I didn’t plan to dive into 20th-century political history when I opened the longread about the hippie trail. But the trail is political history disguised as travel. Every step from Istanbul to Kathmandu is a step through territory where four empires (Ottoman, Persian, British, Russian) and three religions (Sunni and Shia Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism) converge. Walking the trail is walking along a geopolitical fault line, and any movement in that fault (Khomeini, Brezhnev, Carter) physically collapses the trail.

1. Mesh networks are fragile, even with 20,000 nodes. The hippie trail operated for 22 years, served ~500,000 people, had dozens of relay nodes. It was enough to lose 5–6 key nodes (Tehran, Kabul, Peshawar) in 12 months—and everything collapsed. This is the same failure model as in BGP when Tier-1 providers go down simultaneously, and the same failure model as in CDNs when several edge locations are lost. A mesh network without self-healing isn’t a network but a temporary construct. The trail was a temporary construct, and it honestly acknowledged this with its death.
2. “Open infrastructure” can be killed by people who never used it. Khomeini never traveled the hippie trail. Karmal never sat in the Pudding Shop. Brzezinski never made it to Chicken Street. None of them knew the trail existed until they shut it down. This is a pure example of systemic risk in Nassim Taleb’s sense: global infrastructure used by 500,000 people can be destroyed by the decisions of 3 people who aren’t even part of its ecosystem. In the modern world, this is the same model as dependency hell in npm, when 0.001% of packages break and take down 80% of the frontend: the vulnerability isn’t in your system but in nodes you don’t even know about.
3. Money and ideology kill mesh networks faster than geopolitics. Operation Cyclone turned a peaceful travelers’ corridor into a weapons corridor. 2,300 Stingers and $6–12 billion created infrastructure that replaced the trail with 30+ years of war. And today, in 2026, the mujahideen and border guards’ mesh network in the Hindu Kush is the “new trail,” but with the opposite semantics: not carrying tea and hash, but Kalashnikovs and opium. This is perhaps the most striking 20th-century example of a “negative network effect”—when mesh infrastructure born for travel and money transforms into war and drug trafficking infrastructure, preserving the geography but inverting the meaning.
And one last aside: Lonely Planet was the world’s first successful federated wiki. The book Across Asia on the Cheap is essentially the first Wikipedia: 94 pages written by two people based on the gossip protocol from a mesh network, created without a central editor, without publishing infrastructure, without marketing. Lonely Planet’s success isn’t “business success”—it’s proof that the hippie trail’s mesh network was dense enough to spawn an entire publishing empire. And when BBC bought Lonely Planet for £63 million in 2007, the company sold the gossip capital accumulated over 30 years from a mesh network that had ceased to exist 28 years earlier. That is, BBC paid £63 million for the trail’s ghost, not knowing it was a ghost.
And this ghost still prints guidebooks. Which no one buys. Because the trail died, and with it died the information transmission method that sustained the brand. Maybe that’s why Lonely Planet is dying slowly but inevitably today—not from competition with Google Maps, but from the impossibility of restoring the gossip protocol that created it.
