At the 2026 Belgian Grand Prix, Ferrari was fined €30,000 for running over its own mechanic during a pit stop. The mechanic survived, escaped with a bruise—but the FIA remembered that this exact distance, these one-and-a-half to two seconds, has already claimed lives in Formula 1 history. More than once.
A modern F1 pit stop is 1.80 seconds (McLaren/Lando Norris record, Qatar GP 2023), 20+ people in uniform, four wheel guns, jack operators front and rear, wing adjusters, two "nose guys" with front wings, and an aerodynamic "cone" on the nose. The team executes the routine like Williams's Monza pit stop—choreographically, precise to the hundredth.
But to understand what engineering and human journey this operation has traveled, you need to rewind the tape fifty years.

Starting 14th, Tom Pryce (Shadow DN8) at full speed flew into the pit lane zone where marshal Frederick van Vuuren was running across the track with a fire extinguisher toward the stricken car of Renzo Zorzi. Tom was accelerating to ~270 km/h—he had neither hydraulic brakes in that section nor time to react: both marshal and driver died instantly. Pryce's car rammed Zorzi, flipped, and caught fire.
This was the first marshal death in F1 in 25 years. And it happened not because of pit stop technique, but because of a complete absence of protocols: marshals ran onto the track manually, without barriers, without lights, without pit lane speed limits. Until 1994, Formula 1 had no pit lane speed limit at all—cars flew in there at 80–100 km/h.

Working in the Jordan team pit lane was 37-year-old mechanic Graham Beveridge. When Jacques Villeneuve exited his box at speed, his front wheel detached and flew in an arc across the pit lane. It hit Beveridge in the chest. The mechanic died on the spot from injuries incompatible with life.
Villeneuve later admitted he didn't remember the moment—everything happened so instantaneously. After this incident, the FIA mandated teams:

One second. Seven hundred milliseconds—that's the time it takes for four wheel guns to unscrew 4 bolts from 4 wheels. To understand what kind of engineering spectacle this is, let's break it down by layers.
Since 2010, teams must release the car from the box in no more than a specified time (currently around 2.5 sec for full service), otherwise a penalty for unsafe release. In practice, the average pit stop for top teams runs 2.0–2.4 seconds. Red Bull averages 2.1, McLaren 2.2, Mercedes 2.3.
McLaren's Qatar 2023 record—1.80 seconds. This means from the moment the car stops to its release, 1.80 seconds of real time passed. In that time:
