The Hook: Two press releases in a row (from 16:21 and 23:29 on August 12) contained two phrases that I initially read as two different news items, then realized they were the same story from two different angles. The first — Andrea Stella in an interview with Motorsport.com (July 31, 2026): "It's always been in this 2026 season, it's a matter of a race of upgrades". A race of upgrades. Sounds like standard paddock bureaucratese. The second — Oscar Piastri in a Q&A with McLaren before the summer break: "The stakes aren't quite as high at the moment as what they were, especially compared to last year. Obviously, you're still trying to do your absolute best and get the best result you can, but there's a little bit less pressure, which means you're able to try new things and experiment a little bit more, and see how you can improve". "Less pressure — more experiments." Sounds like a calm admission from a driver who lost his title chances.
But if you put these two quotes side by side and look at 2026 as a unified object, you can see an architectural shift that none of the commentators are calling by its proper name: in 2026, Formula 1 quietly transformed from a "race of drivers" into a "race of upgrades in which the driver who lost the championship becomes the team's most valuable measuring instrument". McLaren isn't just making up a deficit through new parts — McLaren reassigned Piastri's role: from title contender to R&D laboratory on wheels. And hidden in this reassignment is one of the most undervalued architectural shifts of the season.
To understand what Stella is talking about, you first need to see how different 2026 became compared to any previous year in modern F1.
This is the biggest regulatory shake-up in recent history: smaller, nimbler cars; ~50/50 power split between ICE and battery; new 350 kW MGU-Ks; completely reworked aerodynamics; new energy management rules. Stella himself says in an F1.com interview after qualifying in Austria (June 28, 2026): "I think what we see in 2026 is a Formula 1 operating at a level that has never been the case before... The overall gain, in terms of pure performance development, but also performance delivery to track, is to a higher level than I've ever seen before". And continues: "I think this is because the rules are still relatively immature and the opportunities in terms of developing the car are almost low hanging fruit to cash in". Meaning: the 2026 regulations are immature, and every upgrade at the start of the era gives an abnormally large gain. Low-hanging fruit. Whoever picked them first wins.
Stella himself gives the number in the Motorsport.com interview (July 31): "I expect that the car that will be the best car at the end of the season will keep adding tenths of a second in the next 11 [12 currently scheduled] races, probably as much as half a second". Half a second over 11 races. That's an average of 4-5 hundredths per race — meaning every other weekend brings the equivalent of one qualifying row. In any other season, half a second over six months is an impossible gain. In 2026 it's normal.
Laurent Mekies at Red Bull indirectly confirms the same figure — but with the opposite sign. His team came to Melbourne -1.3 seconds off the pace of the leaders. Over 11 races they clawed back about a second. "We have brought a huge amount of development to the car between race one and here, in order to try to as soon as possible correct the large deficit we initially had". And now, before the summer break, he admits: "Heading into the summer break, Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies admits it will be difficult for his team to maintain that rate of development during the second half of the season. That is naturally linked to F1's budget cap, which has been set at $215 million this year". Red Bull already burned through half a year's budget playing catch-up. McLaren, according to Stella, plans to maintain that same pace for another six months.
Think about this asymmetry. The team that fought for the title last year (Red Bull, 2nd place in the 2025 Constructors' Cup) is forced to slow down its upgrade rate because of the cost cap. The team that was in the midfield (McLaren champion 2024-2025) is ramping up the pace because the low-hanging fruit hasn't all been picked yet, and ATR (sliding scale aerodynamic restrictions, where the lower your position the more wind tunnel runs and CFD hours you get) gives them more resource than the factory teams. Meaning the 2026 championship isn't about driver talent, race strategy, or tire management, but about the sequence and quality of engineering iterations against two regulatory constraints: cost cap and ATR. Formula 1 in 2026 is a competition of R&D cycles under fixed resource constraints.
And here's where the Piastri paradox actually begins.
Here's what Oscar Piastri says in an interview with Code Sports Australia (July 31, 2026):
"The stakes aren't quite as high at the moment as what they were, especially compared to last year. Obviously, you're still trying to do your absolute best and get the best result you can, but there's a little bit less pressure, which means you're able to try new things and experiment a little bit more, and see how you can improve. This regulation change has been like a completely fundamental change to how you drive a race car, in some ways. It's been a huge reset for us, for me as well. I've had to tackle things in different ways and change the way I go about some things."
And Stella, explaining why Piastri is losing positions to Norris (9-1 in qualifying after the April break, average gap 0.099 seconds, 7th place in qualifying for seven straight races since Canada), offers an even harsher diagnosis in Motorsport.com (July 19): "I think the drivers are talking about this generation of cars requiring a certain driving style. Basically, if you just try to drive too clean, the lap time doesn't come. You have to attack the car, you have to accept that the car slides, you have to be extremely active. And this is a driving style that comes more normal to Lando than Oscar. We are working with Oscar to make sure that his natural application in terms of driving input takes these characteristics into account".
Notice the layers. Layer one — Piastri really did get slower because the new cars require aggressive, "dirty" driving, and his natural style is smooth, precise, engineering-minded. Layer two — McLaren is deliberately using his 2026 season as a training ground. He can afford to lose to Norris in qualifying because he's not leading the championship, and the team can afford not to pressure him so he can retrain rather than chase results. Layer three — this is that very freedom to experiment he's talking about. Piastri tries different setups, different styles, different approaches to energy management — and every attempt he makes generates data for the team. Data that in the 2026 R&D cycle is worth more than one fast lap.
It's not a coincidence that McLaren is simultaneously:
This is a new role in which a driver becomes a dynamic test bench. In 2024 and 2025, McLaren won both championships, and in both seasons the logic was reversed: Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were both title contenders (in 2025 — against Verstappen, in 2024 — against the same Verstappen and Ferrari). Back then the race of upgrades was also happening — but it was happening within the title race. Every McLaren upgrade in 2023-2024 was aimed at closing the gap or increasing the lead in the points standings. Now the logic is different: McLaren is defending the championship not through driver results but through the speed of car evolution. Which means driver results are no longer the team's main success metric. The main metric is how quickly the next upgrade will add on track, and how well the team has learned to understand the new regulations.
In this sense, 2026 is the first season in which F1 faced a real architectural fork: what's more profitable for a team — to win the race on Sunday or win the next upgrade cycle by Friday? McLaren, apparently, chose the latter. And this, by the way, is a very logical choice: half a second that can still be found in the car converts into points in every remaining race. One podium is +15/+18 points one-time. Half a second per lap is +5...+15 points in every race until the end of the season, which totals +80...+200 points. Meaning engineering progress, as always in Formula 1, scales better than an individual driver's result. But in 2026 this scaling became extremely steep due to regulatory immaturity.
And here's the kicker: if R&D matters more than results, then a driver not fighting for the title becomes more valuable, not less. Because his only job is to generate data. And data in 2026 is the scarcest resource.
To cement this thesis, let's look at the opposite case — Red Bull. Mekies says directly: "We have brought a huge amount of development to the car between race one and here, in order to try to as soon as possible correct the large deficit we initially had". Red Bull poured everything into the first half of the season to get out of the minus-1.3 seconds hole. And now, before the summer break, admits: "it will be difficult for his team to maintain that rate of development during the second half of the season".
The alternative path — conserve budget, distribute upgrades evenly. But Mekies explains why Red Bull chose to "shoot all at once": "We've decided to make the big push as early as we could from an engineering and engineering resource perspective... We would like to hope that things will slow down for certainly most of the top teams in the second part, but we may have some surprises". Meaning Red Bull went all-in: if we don't catch up now, it'll be too late.
What does this mean in practice? In the race of upgrades, Red Bull effectively dropped out of the game for the second half of the season. They don't have budget for another major upgrade before year-end. McLaren, according to Stella, maintains the pace — they still have reserves in both budget and ATR (which from July 1 is recalculated based on first-half results, and McLaren after the first half of 2026 will apparently get even more wind tunnel runs because after 11 races they're not in first place in the Constructors' Cup — which reduces their ATR burden).
So Red Bull invested in iteration speed — and this investment paid off (from -1.3 to -0.3 seconds), but bankrupted the second half of the season. McLaren is investing in iteration consistency — and this strategy looks winning right now. But nobody knows what the third quarter will look like, because in an R&D race with a finite budget there are only two patterns: "shoot immediately and fade into shadow" (Red Bull) or "shoot consistently and hope competitors go bankrupt" (McLaren).
And in the middle — Piastri, the driver whose "less pressure" became an asset because the pressure on McLaren as a team hasn't gone anywhere — it just migrated from driver results to R&D output quality. McLaren is defending the championship not through Norris's points but through the pace at which it iterates the car. And for that it needs a free driver — a driver who can afford to experiment because his results don't determine the team's fate.
And the last thing that makes this paradox engineering-deep rather than just sports-psychological. Stella says: 2026 cars require "attack the car, accept that the car slides, be extremely active". Meaning the driver is required to provoke slides, work on and beyond the edge of grip, tolerate slides in fast corners, not try to drive "clean." This is a requirement of the new regulations — low cars with high electric power and active aerodynamics.
Piastri is a driver with an engineering, methodical style. That's what characterized him from his first F1 season in 2023. And now it turns out this style doesn't fit the new regulations without retraining. McLaren understands this and openly talks about it — which is itself unprecedented for a top team. And precisely because Piastri is free from title pressure, McLaren can afford to talk about it publicly and work with him on changing style publicly, without fearing it will break him or undermine his confidence.
Meaning the paradox closes: freedom from the title (which Piastri perceives as a loss) is a necessary condition for retraining to new regulations. If McLaren were fighting for the title through Piastri, it couldn't afford to publicly admit its driver is "too clean" for the new cars. That would destroy him psychologically, give competitors leverage, tank his market value. But now — it's just a working engineering problem: driver learns, team adapts, both iterate.
1. The race of upgrades in 2026 isn't a side effect of the new regulations but their direct consequence. Immature rules + cost cap + ATR = R&D cycle as the main success metric. And in this sense, the half-second that can still be found in the car matters more than the result of any specific Grand Prix.

4. Driver style is a new variable that the 2026 regulations sharply revalued. McLaren openly says Piastri is "too clean" for the new cars. This is a public admission that in 2026 talent doesn't decide, but whether a driver's style matches the car's requirements.
