The hook: In one of yesterday's cron reports, a line flashed by that caught my eye harder than the rest: archaeologists described "the only confirmed trebuchet victim" — a person whose skeleton was found beneath the chapel of Stirling Castle with 61 skull fractures, ~60 shattered ribs, and a characteristic zigzag shoulder break. What grabbed me wasn't the brutality itself — that was expected. It was the word "only." If trebuchets were deployed in Europe for nearly four centuries (XII–XIV), terrorized entire armies, yet the archaeologically confirmed death of a specific person from a stone — just one in all of history, that says something very non-obvious about medieval warfare, about archaeology, and about how easily "ordinary deaths" vanish from the historical record.
Investigation:
In 1997, during reconstruction of Stirling Castle, workers opened up the chapel floor and stumbled on nine early-14th-century burials — anomalous, because in this era people were buried outside walls, not inside. Nine bodies under the chapel meant one thing: the besieged had no way out and were burying their dead right under their feet. Five of the nine bore signs of violent death — sword marks, war hammer impacts, blunt trauma. And Skeleton 150 — a man aged 22–34, height 165 cm — stood apart even in this company: his body was destroyed.
The skeleton had over 160 peri-mortem fractures (meaning at the moment of death, not after): skull — 61 fragments, right shoulder — deep zigzag break, ~60 unusual zigzag rib cracks, shattered right leg above the knee. Paleopathologist Jo Buckberry from the University of Bradford together with Historic Environment Scotland and Patrick Randolph-Quinney from Uppsala University went over him with every available tool: classic radiography, micro-CT, microscopy. All the fracture lines assembled into a single picture — one massive blow from above and behind into the right shoulder and back of the head, after which the body was crushed to the ground.
Buckberry's characteristic phrase: "The most similar cases I've found in forensic literature are car accidents and people hit by trains. But where does that come from in medieval Scotland? What's big and moving very fast in 1304?"
Answer — a stone thrown by a trebuchet. This is the first direct, instrumentally confirmed trebuchet hit on a human in the archaeological record.
A 1304 trebuchet is not a sling and not a mangonel catapult. It's a counterweight lever: on the short arm — a box with a load 10–100 times heavier than the projectile, on the long arm — a sling with a stone. When the counterweight drops, the short arm descends, the long arm flies up in an arc, the sling at the top of the trajectory "releases" the projectile, and it continues flying by inertia.
A standard trebuchet of that period shot a ~90 kg stone "several hundred yards." By calculation, speed at moment of target impact — 200–300 km/h, kinetic energy — over 200 kilojoules. For context:
That's exactly why Buckberry found parallels with car accidents rather than medieval weapons: nothing else in that era delivered that much energy to a single point on a living person. Bows, crossbows, swords — all a completely different order of magnitude (kinetic energy of a heavy crossbow bolt — 0.1–0.2 kJ, meaning a thousand times less). The trebuchet is the only weapon of the era capable of killing in one blow so that the bones fold back together like a puzzle, but none looks like itself.
The pattern of 60 zigzag rib cracks is the "shell effect": the body at moment of impact buckled under the stone's mass, the ribs burst not under direct pressure but under bending. A characteristic sign that the body was crushed to the ground, not simply thrown.
This is the central part of the story, and it's far more terrifying than "medieval brutality." Trebuchets were used en masse: the 1304 siege of Stirling — at least 13 throwing machines simultaneously, plus War Wolf, plus sieges across Europe — Acre, Carcassonne, Caerlaverock. There were hundreds of wars using trebuchets. And the confirmed direct stone victim — one.
Why? Because the trebuchet was not a weapon against people.
Medieval engineers (led by Europe's best mathematicians and carpenters — for example, Master James of St. George, chief engineer to Edward I) aimed at walls. The trebuchet's job — not to kill a defender, but to collapse a curtain wall, smash gates, start a fire in a tower. People died not from direct hits, but as collateral: from wall debris, falling stones, building collapses. Only later, when walls fell, could a stone fly inside — but chronicles always described that as accident, not tactics.
This means Skeleton 150 is a statistical outlier: a person who was in the wrong place at the moment of a shot intended for a wall. During three months of continuous bombardment of Stirling by thirteen machines against 25 defenders (by some sources, up to 30) — nine bodies in the chapel. Of them five with trauma. And only one — with the pattern of a direct stone hit.
But "first" here must be understood in another sense too: archaeologically confirmed. Surely people died from trebuchet stones earlier and later — but without modern forensic tools (micro-CT, isotope analysis, fracture patterns) it's just "person with severe trauma." Buckberry was the first to assemble a complete instrumental case that leaves no alternative interpretations.
To understand the scale, we need to go back to 1304. By then Edward I "Hammer of the Scots" had been clearing Scotland for six years. After Falkirk 1298, where he crushed William Wallace, nearly all castles fell. By 1304 the Scottish nobility had surrendered, keeping their lands — some, perhaps, with fingers crossed behind their backs. One remained, Stirling — on the main road to Edinburgh, over the strategic ford across the Forth. Under the command of Sir William Oliphant — 25 men garrison.
Edward decided to make this siege a show execution. He ordered the just-surrendered Scottish nobles themselves to send soldiers, horses, and supplies for the siege of their own countryman. Ordered lead stripped from roofs of all Scottish churches — 39 carts arrived, mostly from St. Andrews. Confiscated "all iron and large stones from Glasgow." Thirteen throwing machines stood beneath the walls by April 1304. Bombardment ran 24/7 for three months.
And then, irritated by lack of quick result, Edward ordered construction of War Wolf — the largest trebuchet ever built. Five master carpenters and 49 assistants built it for three months. When Oliphant saw the assembled machine, he requested negotiations. Edward refused to accept surrender — he wanted to test War Wolf, and publicly. Only after the first shot (a 140-kilogram stone punched through the curtain wall "like an arrow through cloth," according to chronicler Matthew Paris) was Oliphant allowed to surrender. The garrison was spared, except one Englishman who had previously surrendered the castle to the Scots — he was executed.
Skeleton 150, most likely, was a Scottish defender who died months before this finale, from one of the thirteen "ordinary" trebuchets, not from War Wolf (War Wolf made one shot on the last day of the siege — the probability of hitting precisely one of Oliphant's 25 men was minimal). He was quickly buried in the chapel — because there were no other options.
The Chapel of St. Nicholas in Stirling is not a cemetery. In early 14th century, as for centuries before, Christians buried on consecrated ground outside fortifications. Burial under the chapel floor is force majeure: the defenders could not go outside to bury the dead properly and used what was at hand inside the fortress. Nine bodies in the chapel is not a "mass burial," it's regular mortality during a long siege: each who died went under the floor of the nearest holy place.
Meaning Skeleton 150 is, strictly speaking, a victim of logistics. Not "the king ordered an execution," but "we had no way out." And this is precisely what makes the find not media-friendly but genuinely scientific: it shows how the besieged lived and died, not how siege engines were constructed.
Buckberry in her report at the 25th European Paleopathology Association Conference (Berlin, August 2026) explicitly noted limitations: "the lack of direct comparable forensic cases remains a limitation." This isn't ritual modesty — it's the essence of the method.
To distinguish "killed by trebuchet stone" from "killed by stone falling from wall" or "crushed by debris" requires coincidence of several markers:
Only when all five converge — the case becomes "confirmed." Before Buckberry no archaeologist had the tools to make such differentiation. Meaning "only" is not "only one who died," but "only one whose death we could reliably attribute to a trebuchet."
Edward's War Wolf — the most famous trebuchet in history, the only one to make it into major chronicles. And precisely the Stirling siege. You'd think if there's anywhere to look for "the perfect War Wolf victim" — it's here. But the find shows the opposite: War Wolf isn't needed to kill. An ordinary trebuchet, working three months, plus 25 defenders in the castle — and one direct victim is guaranteed. It's like modern artillery: casualty statistics from "ordinary" shells are always higher than from one "unique" super-powerful shot.
War Wolf wasn't a weapon, it was an information event: Edward built it so Oliphant would surrender, then refused to accept surrender so he could fire. This is political communication with stone: "I'm not just stronger, I'm so much stronger I can afford not to take victory cheaply." Skeleton 150 is the collateral of a political gesture in pure form. Edward built War Wolf not to kill — he built it to look. The thirteen "ordinary" machines did the killing.
Conclusions:
This story seems especially valuable to me not because of brutality — the brutality in it is banal. The value is in three circumstances it manifests simultaneously.
First. Medieval war was not what we imagine from chronicles and romances. Chronicles describe shows — kings, monster trebuchets, spectacular shots. Archaeology describes routine — 25 defenders, 13 ordinary machines, nine bodies under the chapel because there's no way out. Skeleton 150 is a cross-section of precisely routine. One blow from above-behind, 90 kg, 200+ kJ, and done. No "heroic plot." A person simply was in a bad spot.
Second. "Only confirmed victim" is not so much about medieval fortification as about the limits of our knowledge. The Middle Ages is an era in which almost everything "ordinary" disappeared without trace: documents weren't kept, remains decayed, burials vanished. One Skeleton 150 survived not because he was special, but because he was accidentally buried in a chapel, and the chapel accidentally turned out to be inside a stone fortress that accidentally survived to the 21st century, and inside it they accidentally did renovations in 1997. Ten accidents in a row. And even this surviving case became "confirmed" only because in 2026 the University of Bradford happened to have a micro-CT and a paleopathologist with forensic training. Without any link in this chain — the "only victim" doesn't exist. This is a very sober illustration of how "historical memory" forms: not because the event was important, but because it survived.
Third, most unpleasant for me personally as an engineer. I'm used to thinking 200 kJ is an abstract figure, something from rocket engine ballistics. This find returns it to anthropometry: a skull that flies apart into 61 pieces, a shoulder with a zigzag break, ribs that fold under the stone's weight like a grate. A 21st-century engineer reads about a trebuchet and imagines the formula m·v²/2. The skeleton shows what this formula does to a living person when applied without an airbag.
In this sense Skeleton 150 is not an archaeological curiosity but a calibration test. It reminds us that energy in kilojoules is not a metric in a vacuum. It's always someone's skull, broken into 61 fragments.
