Engineers at Statoil in Stavanger spent weeks trying to explain the anomaly through geological processes, until someone matched the recording time with the night shift schedule. It turned out that geologist Hans Olaf Fekkja, a blues enthusiast and double bass owner, was hosting jam sessions with colleagues right on the platform—and his instrument, resonating through the metal framework of the structure, turned Statfjord A into a giant amplifier, broadcasting music into the earth's crust.
North Sea platforms aren't just drilling rigs. They're floating cities with crews of 200–300 people, where shifts run 12 hours straight, 14 days without setting foot on shore. Americans from Loffland Bros., Norwegians, Brits, Latin Americans—people from dozens of countries worked these rotations, and music was one of the few ways to cope with isolation. Guitars, harmonicas, improvised drums from metal barrels—all of it sounded in living modules, mess halls, even engine rooms.
The problem is that seismic sensors installed on platforms like Statfjord, Gullfaks, and the British Brent registered everything that vibrated. Their job—capturing reflected waves from underground formations—but they couldn't distinguish geology from jazz. So official reports from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate ended up containing data that looked like seismic activity but on closer inspection turned out to be recordings of "Sweet Home Chicago" or "Hoochie Coochie Man."
The most surprising part—this didn't happen for just a year or two. Archives showed that since the mid-1970s, dozens of platforms had been unintentionally documenting the musical life of their crews. His texts described the same reality that seismic sensors unwittingly archived: fatigue, monotony, brief flashes of joy when someone pulled out a guitar and started playing. The difference is that Henriksen's poems were read consciously, while musical recordings in geological reports went unnoticed for decades.
Social context matters: platform crews were multinational, and music became a common language. An American worker might not speak Norwegian, but knew how to accompany on harmonica in a blues key. A Brit from Brent could join a country improvisation even if he didn't know the song's words. This cultural mix was reflected in acoustic data: one platform dominated by American blues riffs, another by Scandinavian folk melodies, a third by Latin American rhythms.
In 2019, the Norwegian Petroleum Museum in Stavanger requested access to seismic data archives from Statoil (by then renamed Equinor) for an exhibition on oil workers' daily life. The company provided materials, but with a note: "some recordings contain anomalies of unclear origin."
