August 21, 1967 in Beirut, in an Armenian family, Serj Tankian was born. Here's what matters: this is not "ethnic background" for interviews. This is history sewn into DNA.
Three roots of his political consciousness:
University — California State University, Northridge (marketing, 1989). There he was president of the Armenian Student Association and worked on promoting recognition of the Genocide — long before he picked up a microphone.

Origins — in the band Soil (~1992), where Tankian (vocals/keys), Malakian (guitar/vocals), Dave Hakopyan (bass) and Domingo Laranio (drums) played. Shavo Odadjian was the manager, then switched to rhythm guitar. When half the lineup left, the remaining trio renamed themselves — the name System of a Down is taken from Malakian's poem "Victims of a Down."
In mid-1997 drummer Ontronik Khachaturian was replaced by John Dolmayan — future son-in-law of Tankian (wives are Madatyan sisters). Family-clan Armenian LA in action.
May 2006 — the band announces hiatus. Industry shock: five albums, Grammy, and — stop. Reasons: burnout, creative disagreements, different vision of the future.
November 2010 — reunion, active touring. But there is no new studio album.
In November 2020, in the midst of the Second Karabakh War, SOAD releases two first singles in 15 years — Protect the Land and Genocidal Humanoidz. Money — to the Armenia Fund.
In 2025–2026 — stadium shows: North America with Korn/Deftones/Avenged Sevenfold; South America (Wake Up! tour); Europe with QOTSA and Acid Bath. That is, the band is earning millions but cannot record an album.

Key nuance: Tankian was pro-Palestine long before 2023. This is not opportunism:

Since 2015 lives alternating between:

This is not a "turn." This is manifestation of what was always inside.
Sectarian chaos of the Civil War, absorbed at age 7 — this is not a lecture on conflict studies, but the nervous system. Tankian saw what nationalism, sectarianism and imperial ambitions lead to — personally, not from a textbook. Any authoritarianism triggers his gag reflex.
Armenian diaspora — a community built around the trauma of expulsion. Every holiday — simultaneously joy and commemoration. Tankian inherited the obligation to bear witness. Silence = betrayal. This turns activism from hobby into existential necessity.
This is the key. Tankian wants the new album to have meaning and message. Malakian — less interested in political agenda. Tankian's quote about Elasticity:
«When I conceived possibly doing another record with the guys from System of a Down a few years back, I started working on a set of songs that I arranged in rock format for that purpose. As we weren't able to see eye to eye on the vision going forward with a SOAD album, I decided to release these songs under my moniker.»
Translation: Elasticity songs were originally for SOAD, but we didn't agree on the vision. Had to release solo. Solo career is not a project. It's a necessity for a person who is not allowed to realize the message within the group.
In SOAD — four equal owners. Solo — Tankian the only owner. Hence — symphonies, jazz, electronics, memoirs about genocide. SOAD is a genre, albeit magnificent. Genre cage, from which Tankian broke out.

Serj Tankian — a rare case when the "turn" in a career is not retreat, but manifestation of the authentic. SOAD was a magnificent shell into which an uncomfortable person squeezed. The genre cage prevented him from saying everything he wants to say. Solo, symphonies, jazz, memoirs, open letters about Gaza and Artsakh — this is unpacking.
Paradox that caught me: Israel in 2026 formally recognized the Armenian Genocide. For the diaspora this is the event of the decade. Tankian reacted not with joy, but accusation of hypocrisy — claiming they recognize someone else's genocide while conducting their own. This is a position that costs money, reputation, comfortable contracts. That's exactly why it's authentic.
At 58, after back surgery, he lives between New Zealand and LA, tours stadiums with a band that hasn't been able to record an album for 15 years, writes symphonies and memoirs, signs political letters that not everyone likes, and drinks his own Armenian coffee at a café in Eagle Rock. This is not "retired rock star." This is a person who still hasn't learned to be silent — and that's exactly why he's still interesting to listen to.
