In 1913, an Italian composer built machines that roared like motors and screeched like sirens. He wanted to turn industrial hell into symphony. Fifty years later, guitarists accidentally resurrected his program — and called it a revolution.
Luigi Russolo wasn't a musician in the classical sense — he was a futurist artist obsessed with the idea that the 19th century died along with its violins. In March 1913, he writes a letter-manifesto to his comrade, composer Francesco Balilla Pratella, and calls it L'arte dei Rumori — "The Art of Noises." The text reads like an indictment against the entire European musical tradition.
Russolo asserts: the ear of modern man is trained by factories, trains, crowds. The orchestra can no longer move him — too quiet, too clean, too dead. He divides all the world's sounds into six families: roars, whistles, whispers, screeches, strikes on metal, and voices (human and animal). Each family is evidence: industrial civilization has already created a new sonic landscape, but musicians pretend it doesn't exist.
The manifesto comes out as a separate book in 1916, but by then Russolo has already built the material evidence — 27 variants of mechanical instruments called intonarumori (literally "noise-makers"). Each one — a wooden box with a horn, inside which wheels spin, strings are stretched, membranes are installed. A crank allows changing the pitch. The horn amplifies and directs the sound. No electricity — pure mechanics, but the result sounds like a prototype of the industrial noise that decades later will be called noise music.
Russolo doesn't hide his intentions. He writes: "We want to attune and regulate these diverse noises harmonically and rhythmically." This isn't chaos for chaos's sake — it's controlled aggression. And here lies the first clue: the idea of turning distortion into an instrument, not a defect.
April 21, 1914, Dal Verme Theater in Milan. Russolo and his assistant Ugo Piatti roll a battery of intonarumori onto the stage. The audience expects a scandal — the futurists have already earned a reputation as provocateurs. But no one is ready for what's about to sound.
The instruments start working. One imitates the roar of an engine, another — the howl of a siren, a third — the screech of tram brakes. Sounds layer on top of each other, creating a dense, oppressive texture. This isn't melody in the usual sense — it's an organized collision of frequencies. Part of the hall applauds, part whistles. By mid-concert, a brawl breaks out: opponents of futurism throw vegetables, supporters respond with fists. Police intervene. Russolo is pleased — scandal is the goal.
But something else matters more: in this chaos sounds a principle that will later become the foundation of rock aesthetics. Russolo doesn't mask the "dirt" of sound — he brings it to the foreground. When intonarumori roar at maximum volume, their timbre distorts, horns rattle, strings give overtones. Russolo doesn't fix this — he builds distortion into the score. Roughly speaking, he discovers that an overloaded signal can be not an error, but a language.
The tour continues — London, Paris. Everywhere the same reaction: some are thrilled, others demand a ban. But after 1914, traces of intonarumori are lost. Most instruments are destroyed during World War II. Russolo fades into shadow, his manifestos settle in archives. Case closed — it would seem.
While intonarumori gather dust in forgotten warehouses, Russolo's idea migrates. Edgard Varèse, the Franco-American composer, in the 1920s begins writing music for percussion and sirens — a direct echo of the manifesto. John Cage in the 1930s experiments with "prepared piano," shoving bolts and rubber between the strings, turning the instrument into a percussion machine. Pierre Schaeffer in 1948 creates musique concrète — music from recorded and processed real sounds: trains, factories, voices. They're all Russolo's heirs, though they don't always acknowledge it.
But the true resurrection of the noise program happens where no one expected — in rock 'n' roll. In 1951, guitarist Ike Turner records Rocket 88, and because of a damaged amplifier, the guitar sounds with ragged distortion. The producer didn't re-record — let it be as is. An accident, but it lands in millions of ears. Distortion stops being a defect — it becomes texture.
By the 1960s, this is already a conscious technique. Pete Townshend of The Who hits the amplifier with his guitar, achieving controlled feedback — a sound that emerges when the output signal returns back into the system and creates a self-sustaining howl. Jimi Hendrix in 1967 at the Monterey Festival makes the guitar howl, moan, and screech, pressing it against the amplifier and manipulating the volume. The Velvet Underground turn feedback into a structural element of composition — their European Son (1967) begins with a crash and ends with a wall of noise in which melody dissolves.
None of them read Russolo. None knew that fifty years earlier an Italian was trying to do the same thing with wooden boxes. But the paradox is they were solving the same problem: turning a technological artifact into an artistic device. Russolo wanted to extract music from factory noise, rockers — from electrical overload. Different instruments, one intuition.
The cruelest question: if Russolo understood everything back in 1913, why was he forgotten while Hendrix is remembered? The answer — in technology and context. Intonarumori were acoustic devices, required physical presence, didn't scale. They couldn't be recorded with acceptable quality on 1910s gramophone records — too wide a dynamic range, too many overtones. Russolo could only play live, for a limited audience, in the context of scandalous futurist evenings.
Electric guitar and 1950s amplifiers solved both problems. Distortion arose by itself, as a side effect of overloaded tubes, and sounded clean enough for recording on magnetic tape. Mass production made the effect accessible. Radio and television delivered it to millions. Essentially, rock didn't invent the idea — it got the infrastructure to embody it.
But there's a second layer. Russolo worked in a vacuum — futurism was an elitist movement, his concerts were attended by intellectuals and scandal-seekers. Rock grew from blues, from folk music, from teenage culture. Distortion in rock wasn't a manifesto but an intuition: guitarists broke amplifiers because they wanted to sound louder and meaner, not because they read theoretical treatises. Accident proved more convincing than program.
And yet: when Karl Bartos, member of Kraftwerk, in an interview calls Russolo "the grandfather of electronic music," he acknowledges kinship. Russolo's noise aesthetic sprouts in industrial metal, in noise, in glitch electronics. His instruments are dead, but their descendants are alive. Only now they're made not of wood, but of transistors.
If we follow detective logic, the evidence points to one conclusion: sound distortion isn't an invention but a discovery. Russolo didn't create a new technique, he recorded a shift in aesthetic regime. Industrial civilization changed the sonic environment, and someone had to articulate it. He did it first, but too early — his era didn't have the ears to hear.
Rock musicians of the 1960s arrived at the same discovery by another route — through practice, through mistakes, through technological accidents. They didn't know about the 1913 manifesto, but reproduced its program almost verbatim: factory noise was replaced by amplifier noise, sirens — by feedback, screeching — by distortion. The instruments changed, the essence remained.
In a sense, Russolo's story is the story of all ideas born before their time. They don't die, they wait. Sometimes fifty years, sometimes more. And then someone, not knowing about the predecessor, stumbles upon the same intuition — and the world is suddenly ready to accept it. Not because the idea became better, but because the ears listening to it have changed.
