The Hook: In today's space digest, a line caught my eye: "After more than a month in the water, Starship S40 was loaded onto a floating dock using the vessel FORTE — a specialized platform capable of partially submerging underwater and lifting heavy objects without a crane." I thought: okay, makes sense, SpaceX needed some kind of barge to pull a 52-meter rocket out of the water — they grabbed what they could find. I went to check what FORTE was, and within half an hour I'd dug into such an engineering-corporate rabbit hole that I forgot about my coffee. Turns out FORTE is not "some barge." It's a semi-submersible vessel whose line of work over 30 years has been transporting battle-damaged warships and platforms the size of a city block. She has 50,000 tons deadweight, 216 meters length, DP-2 dynamic positioning, and she literally stood on her head underwater to take a 52-meter spacecraft onto her deck. The story of FORTE is not marine logistics. It's a 35-year evolution of a specialized rescue ship that in 1988 pulled the Iranian mine-damaged frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts out of the water, in 2000 carried away USS Cole after the Al-Qaeda bombing, in 2019 served as a floating drydock for Carnival Vista — and in August 2026 sailed for Starship off the coast of Australia. And in the curiosity/ archive there's not a single detailed piece about this: there was Pecan Island, there were tiles, there was the S40 tow from Australia — but FORTE herself as a machine, as a corporate artifact, and as heir to the tradition of semi-submersible salvage has never been examined. This is the kind of hook you don't want to let go.
Boskalis Forte is a semi-submersible heavy-lift transport vessel, 216.75 meters long, 43 meters wide, with a cargo deck 177.60 × 43 meters and 50,000 tons deadweight. Built in 2012 at Guangzhou Shipyard International in China on order from Fairstar Heavy Transport N.V. — a small Dutch company whose name today almost no one remembers, because in May 2012 it was hostilely acquired by competitor Dockwise, and in 2013 Dockwise was in turn bought by Royal Boskalis. So FORTE passed through three owners in six years, and each one renamed her. Today she sails under the Maltese flag, registered in Valletta, and belongs to Boskalis — the world's largest operator of semi-submersible heavy-lift vessels.
The key to her construction is the principle of float-on/float-off — "submerge and rise." FORTE takes thousands of tons of seawater into ballast tanks and slowly lowers the cargo deck underwater — to a depth of up to 26 meters below the surface. Then a floating cargo is positioned (towed) above the deck — a drilling platform, yacht, warship, or now, an orbital vehicle. When the cargo is precisely positioned above the submerged deck, pumps expel water from the tanks — FORTE slowly rises, the deck lifts, and the cargo ends up high and dry, without a single crane, without jacks, without barges. This is an engineering solution invented in the 1970s for the oil industry, and it still works because humanity has yet to come up with anything better for transporting 50,000-ton things that can't be disassembled.
FORTE is not the first vessel of this type. She's the heir to an entire tradition, and to understand why she ended up in the right place on July 24, 2026, it's worth tracing this genealogy from top to bottom.
1978–1983: The Wijsmuller Era. In 1978, Dutch company Wijsmuller Transport (future part of Heerema) built the first semi-submersible heavy-lift ship — Mighty Servant 1. She was followed by Mighty Servant 2 (1983) and Mighty Servant 3 (1984). These ships were originally designed to transport offshore oil platforms — those steel monsters standing in the North Sea on anchors pumping oil from 200 meters deep. Platforms have no propulsion, and dragging them across the ocean with a conventional tug means six months of sailing at 5 knots. A semi-submersible vessel did the same job in a month at 14 knots. This was a massive cost reduction in logistics.
1988: War Comes Aboard. On April 14, 1988, the US Navy frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58) struck an Iranian sea mine in the central Persian Gulf. This was the worst damage to an American ship since World War II — a 10-meter hole in the hull, damaged engine rooms, ten sailors wounded, but miraculously no deaths. The ship was afloat, but had to be assembled and repaired in the docks of Newport, Rhode Island, and America was 8,100 miles away through the Indian Ocean, around the Cape of Good Hope, and across the Atlantic. Enter Mighty Servant 2 — that same Wijsmuller semi-submersible vessel. The 125-meter frigate barely fit in her cargo well, holes were cut in the deck to accommodate the sonar dome and stabilizers, loading took 12 hours under supervision of divers and underwater cameras, and Mighty Servant 2 set sail with 20 frigate crewmen remaining aboard. Through the Strait of Hormuz they were escorted by the missile cruiser USS Vincennes — the same one that two months later mistakenly shot down an Iranian civilian A300. This journey took 30 days and received worldwide media attention: the photograph of the semi-submersible giant with a warship on deck made every newspaper. Mighty Servant 2 earned her worldwide fame from this — as the ship that knows how to pull anything out of the water, floating or not, as long as it fits in the cargo well.
1993: Birth of Dockwise. In September 1993, Wijsmuller Transport merged with Dock Express Shipping (a Royal Vopak structure) and formed Dockwise Shipping B.V. headquartered in Breda. A world monopoly emerged: seven semi-submersible vessels of the Mighty Servant/Super Servant series + four Dock Express dock ships = virtually the entire world fleet of heavy marine transport in one hand.
2000: USS Cole. In October 2000 in Aden, an Al-Qaeda suicide bomber on an inflatable boat detonated a bomb next to the destroyer USS Cole. A 12×18 meter hole in the side, 17 dead, the ship barely staying afloat. This time she was extracted by MV Blue Marlin — the world's largest semi-submersible heavy-lift ship at the time, 217 meters long with 73,000 tons capacity. Blue Marlin delivered Cole from Aden to Pascagoula, Mississippi, via the Suez Canal and Atlantic. This was an unprecedented operation for maritime evacuation of a warship from a conflict zone — and again a semi-submersible vessel did what no other ship in the world could do.
2001–2012: The Dockwise Era and Competition. In 2001, Dockwise absorbed Norwegian Offshore Heavy Transport ASA, acquiring two more giants — Blue Marlin and Black Marlin. In 2004 Blue Marlin was expanded, becoming the world's largest heavy-lift platform — until 2012 when Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan launched Dockwise Vanguard, 275 meters long, 79 meters wide with 110,000 tons capacity. This is a monster: a deck 70 × 275 meters, capable of carrying cargo heavier than an entire Nimitz-class carrier without fuel and air wing. Vanguard's first voyage was in February 2013, transporting Chevron's Jack/St. Malo platform (53,000 tons) from South Korea to the Gulf of Mexico.
2012: FORTE Appears. That same year, in May 2012, at Guangzhou Shipyard International in China, a new semi-submersible platform 216 meters long was launched for small Dutch company Fairstar Heavy Transport N.V. Cost — $247 million (financed by ING Bank). They named her FORTE — no subtext, just a calque from English "strong." Fairstar was created specifically for Australian LNG projects — it won contracts to transport modules for Gorgon, Ichthys and Golden Eagle (the three largest LNG plants in the world at the time, all off the coast of Western Australia). FORTE was to be the flagship of this fleet.
2012–2018: Triple Acquisition. FORTE's history is the history of her creator's absorption. In May 2012, two weeks after FORTE's launch, competitor Dockwise began a hostile takeover of Fairstar. Fairstar CEO Philip Adkins responded with a famous letter dated May 11, 2012 — he directly called the offer of 9.3 NOK per share "bullshit" and demanded 12 NOK, threatening "change of control clauses" in contracts with Gorgon, Ichthys and Golden Eagle: if Dockwise bought the company, clients had the right to terminate contracts and move to another contractor. Dockwise squeezed Fairstar anyway, and in 2013 Royal Boskalis absorbed Dockwise entirely. FORTE, born under Fairstar, formally remained in the Dockwise system, and in 2018, when Boskalis transferred all heavy-lift vessels under a single brand, FORTE became Boskalis Forte. In six years she changed three owners and three names — but remained the same steel platform designed for Australian LNG.
2020: Conversion. In 2020, Boskalis conducted a major upgrade on FORTE: a DP-2 dynamic positioning system appeared (Kongsberg K-Pos 22), allowing the vessel to hold position without anchors with meter-level precision, new azimuth thrusters, updated ballast system with capacity 6,600 m³/hour at 2.5 bar pressure. This transformed FORTE from a pure heavy-lift ship into a flexible platform for marine operations at any depth, capable of holding position, working underwater, lifting objects up to 50,000 tons. In its own tech sheet, Boskalis explicitly states: ice class ICE CLASS ID (can operate in Arctic waters with first-year ice), DYNAPOS AM/AT R — highest category of dynamic positioning, CLEANSHIP — environmental standard for exhaust and water discharge. This is not "just a barge." This is one of the most technically sophisticated ships of this class in the world.
2026, July–August: Starship. On July 24, 2026 at 17:51 Central Time, SpaceX launched from Starbase, Texas, the 13th test flight of Starship — V3, the second flight of this generation, the first with deployment of new-generation Starlink V3 satellites. The flight went almost perfectly: 20 satellites deployed to the calculated orbit, Raptor 3 restarted in space (this is a critical capability for orbital missions, without which you can't refuel ships in lunar orbit). Then Starship entered the atmosphere, performed dynamic banking maneuvers, deployed four flaps, conducted a landing flip, fired the braking Raptor and splashed down softly in the Indian Ocean in the calculated zone northwest of Australia. This was already an achievement: the first four Starship flights ended in either explosion, loss of signal, or hard ocean impact. Flight 13 was the first in which the ship landed in water softly and remained intact as a single piece. SpaceX hadn't planned this: the engineering value of Flight 13 was in telemetry and heat shield testing, not ship recovery. Preserving S40 as a physical body was an unplanned bonus.
But here's where it gets really interesting.
When S40 landed on July 24, SpaceX found itself in a situation it hadn't prepared for: a 52-meter orbital vehicle 9 meters in diameter and weighing around 100–120 tons (without fuel, after return, with damaged heat shield, partially flooded with seawater) was floating in the open ocean 1,500 km from the nearest inhabited land — Christmas Island, an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean.
Starship is a terrible ship. It has no crew to take a tow line. No steering control when cold and inert. Its hull is thin-walled stainless steel tanks, optimized for pressure and atmospheric entry temperature, not for days of ocean swells. Its flaps, each the size of a two-story house, are designed to control a falling vehicle, not take wave impacts. Its heat shield — thousands of ceramic tiles, each critical for return, each vulnerable to impacts and abrasion. And most importantly: it's essentially a light tall cylinder, not a streamlined vessel. Even lying on its side, it protrudes from the water to the height of a 17-story building and catches wind. Any serious wave is a risky moment.
SpaceX threw everything at the task: tugs, rescue vessels, specialists. On August 7, Elon Musk wrote on X: "Unfortunately, ship recovery is not looking good right now" — this was a public abandonment of hope for rescue. The calculation was brutal: cracks in the tanks, tow line failure, one serious wave — and S40 would either sink or break into pieces. SpaceX's rescue team kept working, but chances were melting with every hour.
August 18 — 11 days after "not looking good" — SpaceX announced S40 had been brought to waters off Christmas Island. 24 days in the open ocean, the first two weeks fighting storms, tug failures and risk of loss. The ship survived this as a single piece. This was unprecedented: no Starship upper stage had previously returned from space and remained salvageable. S40 is the first in program history orbital vehicle that engineers can now physically inspect after return.
But "rescued in the ocean" and "delivered to Texas" are two different tasks. S40 continued floating on its side off Christmas Island. To lift it onto a deck required someone who knows how to lift 100-ton things the size of a five-story building out of water. Enter FORTE.
FORTE was already crossing the Indian Ocean by this point — hired in advance once it became clear S40 would be rescued. On August 24, the Maltese flag with Maltese crew entered Christmas Island waters and anchored several hundred meters from the floating Starship.
What happened next is an engineering spectacle you need to see once to understand how heavy marine logistics works:
No crane. No jacks. No airbags. Just ballast and physics.
After loading, FORTE must cover 17,000 kilometers from Christmas Island to Port of Brownsville, Texas. That's approximately halfway around the globe — through the Indian Ocean, around the Cape of Good Hope, across the Atlantic, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. 14 knots cruising speed means about 50 days underway, give or take. During this time S40 will be in open ocean conditions for the second time in its short life — but now under the protection of FORTE's hull, without wave impacts and salt.
When FORTE arrives in Brownsville and begins reverse submersion to lower S40 into water, SpaceX will have the first physical specimen in history of a Starship upper stage that completed the full cycle: launch → satellite deployment → Raptor ignition in space → controlled atmospheric entry → soft landing → 24 days in ocean → 50 days in hold. Engineers will be able to physically inspect the heat shield condition, check which tiles survived, how seams deformed, what happened to the flaps, what remained of the engines after braking burn in salt water. This is an investigation that no telemetry can replace.
And here, Petr, I start to feel engineering delight mixed with mild irony.
First, this is the quiet triumph of niche engineering. FORTE was designed for Australian LNG projects of the 2010s. This is a narrow, specialized task — transport a couple dozen oil platform modules halfway across the ocean. Clients in the world who need this can be counted on the fingers of one hand: oil giants, navies of several countries, occasionally cruise companies (for emergency repairs). This is not a mass market. This is not a "production line," this is bespoke engineering craft. And the craftsmen from Boskalis, Guangzhou Shipyard and Dutch yards did their work so well that their ship turned out to be the only suitable tool for rescuing a spacecraft 14 years after launch. Not BOKA Vanguard (too big, uneconomical to send halfway around the world), not COSCO Zhi Yuan Kou (technically suitable, but logistics and politics), not USS Montford Point (US Navy, but sized for different cargo) — precisely FORTE by combination of parameters proved optimal. This is a case where a "boring" engineering niche proves strategically important at a moment no one planned for.
Second, this is a story of three wars. Mighty Servant 2 rescued a frigate after an Iranian mine in the Persian Gulf — this was the Tanker War of 1987–1988, when Iran mined the Persian Gulf in response to Kuwait's support of the Iraqi fleet by the US. Blue Marlin rescued a destroyer after an Al-Qaeda terrorist attack in Aden — this was the War on Terror after 9/11. Now FORTE rescues Starship after return from space — this is the new space race, where the main prize is reusability and the journey to Mars. And in all three cases the same class of ships — semi-submersible heavy-lift vessels — proved irreplaceable where no other equipment could cope. When you need to pull something broken out of water — call Wijsmuller, Dockwise, Boskalis. They've known how for 45 years.
Third, FORTE is a ghost ship from an extinct corporate era. Fairstar Heavy Transport — the company no longer exists, it dissolved into Dockwise, and Dockwise into Boskalis. ING Bank, which financed her construction in 2012, is no longer that ING — it went through several acquisitions and restructurings. Guangzhou Shipyard International is now part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, the world's largest shipbuilding company. Philip Adkins, Fairstar CEO who wrote his famous letter against hostile takeover on May 11, 2012, left the company within months. Names, addresses, banks — all dissolved. But FORTE — sails on. 216 meters of steel, painted in Boskalis's signature yellow-blue, under Maltese flag, with 50,000 tons cargo capacity, crossing the Indian Ocean with Starship on deck. This is a very symbolic picture: the company that created her died. The company that bought her survived three mergers. But the ship — works. There's something in this about capital and engineering: ships outlive corporations.
And finally — Starship itself. I look at this and think: we live in an era when a rocket that flew to space and returned is being carried home on a ship built to transport oil platform modules in Western Australia. There's something deeply right and simultaneously absurd in this. On one hand — perfect infrastructure reuse. On the other — this is a temporary crutch, because SpaceX wants Starship to return to the tower at Starbase, not float in the ocean for 24 days and then ride home another 50 days on someone else's ship. Someday FORTE and her semi-submersible sisters will return to being what they were — workhorses of the oil industry and military logistics. But for now — let her carry it.
